Cave in system is gack
When your underground, if you stay in the same place for a while, the roof keeps caving in. You end up with a tunnel to the surface. It kinda ruins the fun for me, so any chance you can fix it? Most honorable developer of my dreams.

thats why you build a support so it dosent cave in so many youtube videos about that and how to build it.

My point is that there is no physics involved, it only caves in when you are positioned under the cave. If your not there then the cave in's don't happen.

Wire Mesh works great too!

If you dont want it to cave in then, use the mesh support. It doesn't matter how real the physics are, you still have to work with what is there for now. With the way things are changing, this could be an issue that is about to be resolved... or not. We'll have to see. Till then, use the supports as the game intended you to.

If there is nobody in the forest when the tree falls, does it make a noise?
I think the point is that (when I last played at least) it only collapses in on you, the player, rather than just somewhere in the cave.

And the counter point is still that this is completely avoidable using the tools provided by some light crafting. This is a simulator. In a real mining operation you wouldn't dig into something without proper supports to keep you safe.Same applies here. the cave-in physics tend to be right where you are, as that's where the weakest part of that wall would be.Hence why I've managed to get myself stuck in my own poorly made tunnels to know that I also screwed up by not making supports. I just didn't run here and complain that I screwed up. Not the game's fault. It was mine for not making the supports and placing them as I went. See that point?

u can use any type of flooring for the roof if u play realistic then use wood flooring untill you can start crafting other material

I think it is a practical approach that has to do with performance. To check all ceilings/walls on the entire map all the time would cost a lot more computing power than just around the player.
I noticed the same thing too, but I choose to experience it as if I make vibrations triggering the ceiling collapse. Still not perfect, but makes sense and good enough for me.

If there was collapse all the time, even when the player is not around then you would go back to your cave and have to dig it out again. And then there would be discussions like "tired of digging out the same mine"
