I used to play as melee engineer and it was kind of fun. With Onslaught you can jump here and there, then you smash them with Emberquake.

imo it's less boring than just spamming Blast Cannon for instance :p

If you Emberquake with a twohander, you can pick up Heavy Lifting (heh) and use a cannon on your weapon swap. You can easily find a few skills to do without and include Blast Cannon/Fusillade. Best of both worlds!

Most boring engineer I ever played was for sure the summoner. Spider Mines all day, every day.

Hahaha yeah summoner engineer is so boring. Also for a pure summoner (spending all your stats and skill in survivability because that's all that matters) you are a cripple until you actually get the mines...

= = =

The only time I liked a pure Spider Mine Robot Summoner build was when all of my Gear was socketed with the Level 82 Skull of Umbarmun which boosts Pet and Minion Damage by 35% per Skull.

= = =

Otherwise I prefer an all around Hybrid Cannon Hammer Shield Summoner to maximize my skill attack options.

= = =

The Engineer is so stacked with skill style options that it makes me wonder what would have happened if Runic Games had swapped the Blitz Tree with the Berserker's Tundra Tree [in Function not Theme].

When I think about it, that would have been a cool use of a Frost Cannon Breath / Blizzard and Steam Geysers erupting from the ground representing the sheer power of mechanized earthquakes and reverse climate change XD.

And then the "Static Cannon / Shield" chaining Lightning... O_o

= = =

On the flip side maybe Berserkers could have used Heavy Lifting to boost the Speed of Heavy 2 Handed weapons to similar effect of having a speedy dual wield option.

Supercharge and "Physical de Grace" would have been "Damage Valhalla" for Zerkers lol.

Onslaught and Howl functionality would have to be reconsidered but overall having Emberquake / Hammer / Reach used with Chain Snare would have made Berserker the ultimate Melee skill class...

= = =

But the way Runic Games designed it at least ensures Berserkers get a cold lightning mage theme and Engineers keep their versitility.

Why spamming? There is AoE skill, consumes all charges, there is skill, gets charges from nearby enemies, there is dash.

When I've played as melee engineer, I had lots of free skillpoints. When I've ran as gunner - I always needed MORE skillpoints, as there is so much stuff to get (still didnt master this skill, which shoot auto-aiming bolts. It looks meh, but, it isnt that bad, for when your enemies are on another layer or something like that, coz Blast Cannon cant get em here)

"[Rank 15] Fusilade [auto aim bolts]" can actually out damage "Blast Cannon" if all the bolts hit the same target and they also have knockback which can be amazing against powerful modded bosses.

Here is one viable Melee build guide however it has admittedly less reach than a cannoneer below an enemy position as it has issues targeting foes above on heights as you mentioned.

Sword and shield melee engineers are fun, especially on Elite hardcore. Shield Bash, Heal Bot, Forcefield, Immobi Copter, Onslaught and the Fire Stomp. Not many passives help, just Charge Domination. Keep forcefield up, onslaught in, fire stomp, shield bash till charge is full then make sure you can forcefield when it drops.

Might not sound great, but it's actually kinda fun. Little slow killing things, though.

I had fun as a 1H mace/shield Emberquaker Engineer for a while before I switched over to a 2H staff (eventually will be a 2H greathammer) wielding Shocking Orb Embermage. I would onslaught into the thick of things, use dynamo field to build charge, forcefield to use the charge I built up so I could become practically invincible, and emberquake the ♥♥♥♥ out of anything still on the screen. Champion/Boss fights took longer than other classes, but the fights were safer and it felt satisfying being able to face-tank bosses with no problem.

But I've had much more fun with my Shocking Orb Embermage because I use many skills that are more situational so gameplay doesn't get monotonous. Doesn't have the defensive abilities of an engineer, but being able to rape Bosses in the blink of an eye is a very satisfying feeling as well.
