How to get gold?

I just started this game today and I've been wondering how to get it, since it doesn't tell you how and you need a lot of gold to buy stuff.

Most of the stuff you can buy with gold isn't worth it anyways, like all the equipment sold in the nexus(weapons, rings, abilities)

But you need gold to buy more item storage.

I can't even buy gold in the game, because the steam overlay doesn't work. I've gone through everything to enable it and the game still complains that it's not enabled.

It is a free game, and they need to make money somehow, 20 bucks got me about 30 item slots i think, and another character slot, not too bad value for a game I've spent 60 hours playing.
