Split screen is there most of the time (it changes during the game, depending on context). Was like this with previous Hazelight games too, it's part of the experience.
This game is not playable alone.
its for gameplay reasons. and sometimes the splitscreen go away. for exaple in boss fights.
Konami is even following suit with this. They did the same thing for a new game coming out called Deliver At All Costs.
