Does online multiplayer require one copy, or two?

I know the store page says you only need one person to own the game to play with a friend, but does that apply to only local split screen multiplayer, or also online multiplayer with friends?

I'm trying to figure out if playing the game online with a friend long distance will require one or two copys.

only one full copy - for second player via friend pass (online coop) its free

Only one copy, your friend downloads the "friend's pass" on the store page if trying to play with you online and you own the game.
