Story was honestly nothing special, didn't do anything I haven't seen done better elsewhere a million times over, with predictable story beats and an antagonist so shallow he made classic Disney antagonist look deep. The guy wasn't even fun to hate. I mean, at least someone like Ursula has 'some' background and motivation beyond "I'm a greedy egomaniac."
Story pacing was also pretty mediocre. I've seen worse but it felt pretty close to a badly paced movie in terms of character relationship development. Being in a 12 hour game helped, but it was still a bit rough there.
What HARD carried this game was the varied setpieces and gameplay ideas. Visually, the game looked fantastic, and it was an amazing linear experience for the surprises it throws at you through the gameplay, but it felt like it has absolutely no replay value because those one time surprises are all it has to offer. It was like a playable movie, or a theme park. Definitely worth the experience, but I'll be surprised if it even gets close to game of the year in the long run.
