No you don't need to spend. Period. It is all an illusion, Cards are not real, rank, conquest, none of it. That is what they want you to think. I must get this to be competitive.
There are no real OP cards in this game because the dull them all down.
A Good deck? First three things you must learn. 1. Know all the cards, whether you have them or not. The base set is enough to beat many decks. 2. Part of the game is knowing when to snap, when not to snap and escape is your friend. 3. With 6 archetypes and 16 sub archetypes, if you are not aware of ALL the cards, what makes you think having one will be an advantage than not having one. You know why? because you stay within the play level of not just your skill but your collection tree.
Now to be clear. I agree with Mac's thoughts that it is a long grind. If you really are not in competition with anyone, what is the rush?
Let's take one archetype. Destroy, that base set can beat a ton of decks
https://marvelsnapzone.com/cards/destroy/
There are not many cards in this theme that truly put you at a disadvantage, where you cannot beat cards that are upper in series. A Galactus, Nimrod, X-23, Lady Deathstrike, or any upper series card. Do you actually believe that getting a Negasonic or Phoenix Force will suddenly get your to Infinite. Nope and that is just ONE archetype.
There are archetypes stronger than others. So if I am playing Destroy, and I recognize on turn 2-3 a Negate Tech against met with Cosmo and Armor, Not winning that match, so escape. Deck recognition is critical in this game. You are also facing bots, have to know how to play against them.
In time you will get most of the cards, thru, gold cache drops, spotlight caches, and stock piling tokens to get the Battle Pass card or I must get ARISHEM and now I am a god, no such thing.
I have a young teen who is missing 40 plus cards who has a ball, She gets to 50-60 rank and has fun with her Baby Variants. Everyone is different why they play, but the illusion is the illusion.
There is no pay to play structure yet, or pay to win yet.
Learn all the cards, all the archetypes and you will do fine. Peace
Now I hardly get any new cards except the Cassandra grind nova. Keys have been unkind lately...
I advise at least getting seasonal at least so you get a card and lots of resources that really helps you to get arrows or credits to get two keys in one week.
You will get some series 4/5 cards as f2p but not all. So choose wisely.
You can enjoy the game sure and build decent decks but at the higher competitive levels you will be at a disadvantage since you wont have the flexibility in deck building that paid players have
Tl;dr
If you play casually, you will be fine.
If you play extensively and competitively, you will have to hand over $$$ to keep up.
Other than that, it depends on your goals. If you are content to build a deck or two, you can be competitive as ftp. If you want to experiment and explore, then you will need to spend money to speed up progression, maybe to buy some cards with bundles.
In short, a typical ccg.
You don't need to splurge to become competitive.
I'd only play this game if youre a huge marvel fan, and love card games. Cuz if you don't have those two traits, then this game is not worth it.
As for where exactly does spending more will get you. Nowhere , you just makes SD, Disney and Ben Brode, rich. Spending more money and thinking you get more than the rest is 100% an illusion, they are good at that.
You can quickly complete series 1 and 2, and you get a series 3 card free every season. Once you get keys and tokens, don't spend them on anything lower than series 5. New players should be able to complete Series 3 consistently and quickly with consistent play. 4, 5, and 6 are get what you can when you can.
