It's really not about the gems but board space, since getting him to 20 power is fine, but not always what you should be doing with him.
Several cards and themes can help you here. Since you are not counting on 1-cost selections.
1. With Lockjaw, Jubilee, Baron, he can draw massive power into a lane quickly and spreads it. Mockingbird, Sasquatch, Red Hulk, Cull, She-hulk, Crossbones, Skaar, and Mags allow him a ton of power quick that fit the stones usage.
Try a Lockjaw Thanos deck
off the top of my head
2. Psylocke-Jeff or Nocturne, Hope (huge card for him), Lockjaw, Shang Chi and then power-mockingbird, sasquatch, cull, thanos, skaar. and tweak it how you wish.
3. Arishem/Thanos Blob combo is not a bad deck to try too, because Blob can size up to more cards and stock your deck with power, why, because the mix should give you some early options. You can also go with an tech theme to this but watch the power numbers of those tech cards. Ton of power cards players stack on Thanos, and then just play around with Arishem's random cards to select from.
4. Gilgamesh/Thanos- this one has three outs for you, you kazoo to maintain priority, critical. Gilgamesh/Thanos/Alioth is your big three. Squirrel, Kazar, Blue Marvel hide the illusion of kazoo, you are actually only concerned with locking down the second lane with an Alioth finish. Nico, Squirrel, your stones, are enough, Super Skrull, Hope, Shang Chi all good options to add, but maintain priority.
One Deck I am having fun with now is
5. CopyCat Phastos Thanos-five simple cards to start-Phastos/Hope/Copycat/Shang Chi/ Psylocke and the rest pure power of all the pwr cards I listed above. Fun.
Thanos is okay, I do think they will alter these stones again, some maybe 'Activate" targets, but Lockjaw's return helped him a lot. Just be smart about the cards you pick. Lockjaw Thanos is very strong.
He needs a tweak, but in the meantime have fun.
You be well.
It just seems like playing pure Thanos with some power and tech cards to win 1 other lane is difficult. They should buff Thanos and the stones or do some bigger rework.
He's alright atm, but the opening hand attribute killed him
