Far Cry 2

If I import my standard retail CD key in Steam will I be able to use the Fortune's Edition?
Anybody done this?

I haven't imported a CD key into Steam before so not sure what to expect.

Also, I would ask this question directly to Steam staff but I can't find where to do this. Can anyone tell me where I can do this? Thanks.

you can't directly ask questions to steam staff but you can get a message sent to them from their support webite here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_search.php?searchwords=
and click the contact steam support button (you'll need to create a steam support account to use this)

Sorry I will try and reword my question in hope it might be clearer.
I have the original 'standard' retail box store release version. I don't want to rebuy the game.

What I am wondering is if I put my key into Steam would it unlock the 'Fortune's Edition' version as that is all that is listed on Steam? That way I would be able to play with the addon material.

According to wikipedia you can't get the addon material separately anymore.

Ok, hmm, so maybe I will never find use for the import 'key' function of Steam then.

I'll be happy if I just play my standard version but thought if the option was there I would take it.

Yeah that "activate product on Steam" feature. It is not clear to me what the limitations etc are.

I did try another games product key previously. A real obscure title. Steam system just responded as unrecognized or something like that. Maybe it only works with very limited number of games? Just wish it was outlined very clearly about what games/keys we can use.

AFAIK you can't just use any old key from a game. The 'activate product on Steam' feature is for when you buy a boxed copy of a game that only works by activating on Steam or if you get a game code some other way, for instance, PC Gamer tends to give a game away now and then through Steam. They have a bit of card in the centre of the magazine with a Steam code.

You may be wondering why anyone would buy a boxed copy of a Steam only game. Well, Amazon and some brick and mortar retailers sometimes sell boxed copies of games well under day and date releases on Steam so some people opt to buy it cheaper. I think it's down to some agreement between Steam and retailers not to undercut them on new releases.

Hope that helps.

Oh, ok thanks,

What about bringing GFWL games into Steam, is that done through that 'activate a product on Steam' system?

You can't just enter any game's standard serial key and add it to your Steam account. They're not going to shoulder the cost of bandwidth for delivering games they weren't paid for, such as your copy of Far Cry 2 you bought back in the day from a retail store. The "activate a product" function is specifically for keys issued by Steam and distributed outside of the Steam store. As mentioned before, this includes retail/boxed copies of games that use Steamworks for DRM, or digital copies of games sold at other stores such as Green Man Gaming or Humble Bundle that are required to be activated on Steam. More rarely, there are keys for beta test or exclusive press versions that you will redeem that way in order to access them from your account.

Ok thanks.

Also, asked my brother about how he moved his Street Fighter IV from GFWL to Steam and he said he used the 'Activate a product on Steam' feature.

So guess it may work for some GFWL games as well.

That is a special case where Capcom specifically arranged to migrate their users over to Steam after they dropped support for GFWL, as detailed in this post on their website from earlier this year: http://www.capcom-unity.com/combofiend/blog/2014/05/27/ssfivae-gfwl-to-steamworks-transition

They have announced plans to do the same for RE5 and Dead Rising 2, as well. So, it's more "some Capcom games" rather than some GFWL games in general.

You won't be able to import it because FC2 isn't a Steamworks title. The best you can do is re-buy it on Steam (it's only €2.50 ATM as part of the FC franchise sale). You can then cut and paste your existing retail game folder over to your '...Steam\steamapps\common' folder and let it validate and update. Then pause the update and after resuming it, you'll see that there's only about ~200MB to update. This'll save re-downloading the whole game (~3GB) from scratch.
