Far Cry 2

You can hide in the bushes...
I didn't know you could do that. I've just discovered that you can hide in a bush, and dudes will blunder right past you, a foot away from your face, without seeing you.

As of discovering this, I've played this game for over 300 hours, never knowing this. Until now, I have been using line-of-sight and patience, timing gaps in their attention and sprinting from rock to rock, using the bushes only briefly as concealment, up to the outposts when there are openings. I've played the game 4 or 5 times this way. Never knowing that you can be almost completely invisible just crouching still in a bush. It never occurred to me to try.

I always thought this was the best stealth game ever made, and I only just discovered that it has a stealth mechanic. Jeez.

This is awesome - A friend played all the way through Far Cry 3, - someone posted
something about the crocodile and he said, "There are crocodile??"

Funny how some 'obvious' things can be easily missed. - Still, quite a testament to your patience and timing ! 8 )

If I can ever get multiplayer going I want you on my team !

- Best Wishes -

Infamous difficulty was making a man out of me. Then I discovered the bush thing, and it almost feels like I'm abusing an exploit. Like I'm cheating at the game I've come to know and love.

What other "obvious" things in this game have been missed by it's players? I'm 95% sure you can train your stamina, by sprinting a lot, so that you can sprint longer. But this seems to get counterbalanced by your malaria as the game progresses, so it's hard to notice, but if true it's a nice touch of subtle detail.

Also, I think I might have held a dude up once. Admittedly I sometimes play this game not, entirely, sober, so my memory could be unreliable, but I swear I once walked up behind an unaware guard, held my gun at his head, and he turned around, and he saw me, and he slowly put his hands up and he said something like "we can talk this out." I swear this happened, once, although I have not recreated it. I panicked when I heard another guard approaching and wasted him, but I wonder what could have happened from there.

I would love nothing more than to play this game in multiplayer. I even ♥♥♥♥♥♥ around on the level editor a few times and it looks robust and deep, I bet some good maps come out of it. But you don't want me on your team. I rarely play shooter games and I am terrible at them.

If you get the jump on someone, you can absolutely hold them up. Unfortunately, there's no "next step" to this aside from shooting them. Whether it works is also a bit random.

It would be so cool if you could get them to disarm or surrender.

As for stamina, I don't think that's the case.

I play this game purely for immersion, I've never "tested" anything in order to "game" the "mechanics" of it or whatever.

but your character's sprint meter getting bigger as "something happens" is definitely a thing that i have noticed.

I've put a lot of attention into this.

Vanilla mode - You can only run about 12 steps in the beginning which eventually grows
to 24 or more. About 2/3 into the game it levels off and that's your limit.

The limit can be different for every one, and I think that may be tied to how well you've
kept medicated.

Also - In the beginning you have no rep. and guards aren't intimidated. Later on when
you've earned more rep they all back off when you put a gun in their face.

As far as reputation goes, I've noticed that no matter how many buddy sidequests you do, it never "levels up." Reputation levels seem to be tied to narrative progression, and I do not think you can affect them in any other way. Buddy quests make buddies like you and do noting else that I have seen.

It's interesting about the stamina. Is it tied to narrative progression, or is it an effect of sprinting repeatedly? I assume the latter, onnaccounta the way I play. Maybe it's map-related?

Does swimming breath work the same way?

I don't frequent Far Cry forums like you nerds seem to, I don't know if these topics have been broached.

Yeah, the thing with militiamen throwing up their arms when you aim at them was really surprising to me as well. At least from what I've tested that seems to be dependant on reputation. And it probably only works on lone guards I think.

Another little thing: Campfire and strong wind equals fire burning at an angle and possibly setting aflame the vegetation. Happened to me once.

And I once had a molotov coctail bounce around in a tree and then spin around at the bottom until a nearby militaman checked on it and made it explode. Really weird, but probably also just buggy behaviour. At least partially.

Something that isn't really all that surprising or specific to FC2, but I still haven't seen it more than a few times: Militamen from adjacent outposts will sometimes get involved in combat at neighbouring bases.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I once got hit by a thrown grenade, and my character grunted in pain, but did not take damage.

Also I've had the shoulder-rest of an enemy's rifle block a shot from my dart gun. I don't know if different weapons have different penetration factors, but enemy weapons do seem to have a physical presence, and can block shots, sometimes but not always.

Good point - easy too test out - Thanks !

I'm a few hours out from finishing the game on Infamous, with Dylan's Mod, for the first time.

Anyone tried Dylan's mod vs Hunter's FC2 Redux mod? I've played with Dylan's in the past, and I loved it. Someone recommended the Redux mod, so I decided to try it out. It has been a while since I played with Dylan's mod, but the Redux mod seems to me not to fix the combat at all. I'm still emptying many, many shots into enemies on Normal difficulty and it seems to take forever to put them down.

How odd - Did you restart ?

Yeah, new game and everything. I will test it out. Try some things. I probably screwed something up.
