Far Cry 2

Mods recommended for a first time player?
I want to play this game but I've read things saying it's buggy, especially when your FPS is above 60. Any mods to fix that, and any other mods that are good but don't ruin the experience for a first timer?

What mod should i install?
Hello, I recently purchased Far Cry 2, and while I've enjoyed every other Far Cry game over the years, I've heard that the game is a little problematic and broken. As a novice, what mod should I apply to fix the issues?

And, to improve the game, which mod should I install? I've seen a lot of them but don't know which one to use.

Everyone will tell you to use Multifixer, that's pretty much all you need if you want to play the vanilla game without any hiccups.

If you want mods that change the game a bit then there are plenty to choose from, they're all easy to install so if you are bored of one just replace it with another. Redux and Tom's mod are pretty much the best options if you want something faithful to the original game, and if you want something harder you can go with G.O.R.E (Self-plug here since I made that) or Infamous Fusion (though the latest version released in 2017 and has it's share of bugs)

Thanks for the help mate

G.O.R.E mod Version 1.8 is now live!
New version, new adventures. Update notes are on the download pages:

ModDB link

Nexus link [www.nexusmods.com]

I'll have to tweak the Nexus download in the future to make the bin folder a separate download, gets annoying having to manually ask the site admins to verify every new version.

Masks modding?
Hi everyone. Does anyone know how to mod the game to give the characters in the campaign masks?
kaoken3 Jul 4, 2022 @ 11:13pm
Though I can't say I've gone through the whole guide, I have previously looked through the sections I thought would be relevant. The most I've seen in it is that one can remove facial features and change skin color by setting the ethnicity.

What do you mean "Masks"? Like some sort of overlay on the screen?

Along with Glam's response, what exactly do you mean by masks? Adding a physical Halloween mask wouldn't be possible but you could edit the NPC facial textures to show whatever you want.

Well I was thinking along the lines of a physical mask on top of the face but if that's not possible then editing the face textures might be good enough. I assume that means editing the appropriate xbt file of each character to draw what I want, but to make them really look like masks, would I need to find and remove all the facial features of each character's xbg file?

Yep, all the texture edits are done to the xbts. When you say make them really look like masks I imagine removing their facial animation, which you can do in their relative xml (xx_buddies.xml for friendly npcs and xx_enemy_archetypes.xml for regular mercs). I've never tried that so not 100% what to delete but it should be in the CAnimationComponent section. I wasn't aware of removing facial features as an option, what's your plan with that?
kaoken3 Jul 8, 2022 @ 3:31am
Oh that's an interesting point about the facial animations. I'm wondering if those would be taken care of if the facial features were removed. I'd probably need to test to see if there's any added effect on removing the animations as well.

For removing the facial features, I was thinking of following the same process mentioned in the Far Cry 2 modding guide (Adding the female mercenaries as playable characters - Step 4). In summary, open the xbg file then change the ".xbm" extension of facial/head features listed in it to ".x.m".

Ah yeh, I see what you're planning. The facial features aren't very incremental, so if I'm remembering correctly the xbm would give you the option to remove the hair, eyes, teeth or face skin. Have an experiment with those because it might look pretty buggy with some of them removed. Was that the kind of thing you were hoping to remove?
kaoken3 Jul 9, 2022 @ 8:03pm
I think I'd want to remove everything except the skin and maybe the hair so that it could look like a mask.

Cool, give it a try and please post some screenshots of what it looks like! If you want some help or find the modding guide confusing feel free to ask here.

Tom's Mods for Far Cry 2
It's been a while over two years since first releasing my mods, and now I want to further publicise what progress has been made.

Playable female mercenaries, play as a randomly generated mercenary, playable NPCs, improved agility, improved stealth, better shotguns, better pistols, all weapons balanced to be useful, weapon holstering, weapon inspecting, integrated DLC weapons, silent machete stealth kills, stealth walking with mouse and keyboard, flare gun or IEDs in a new slot, enemies and buddies use more weapons, enemy infighting, more interesting patrol vehicles, dangerous weapon convoys, no longer constantly chased by outposts, faster vehicles, improved hang gliders, colourful DLC vehicles, upgrades for DLC vehicles, colourful Reshade, increased draw distance, improved LOD, better shadows, better night lighting, ai-enhanced UI, new road signs, hand drawn map icons, detailed weapon icons, the syrette icon is actually a syrette, new malaria pill animation, optional limited saving, optional limited navigation, tutorial skip saved games, unlocked DLC, a whole bunch of bug fixes, and much more.

There's been significant progress over the last two years, and in addition to everything above there are customisation options which include a complete ai-enhanced texture pack and a script which stops outposts from respawning the moment you leave the area (thank you to Scubrah).

Come and check out the mod pages for all the details, as there's way too many changes to list here.

There are multiple different versions of the mod available, each has a few key changes on top of everything listed so far:

Vanilla+
(Available from Nexus Mods[www.nexusmods.com] or Moddb)

Vanilla+ leaves the game's original combat unchanged, with its infamous bullet sponge enemies.

Realism+
(Available from Nexus Mods[www.nexusmods.com] or Moddb)

Realism+ removes the bullet sponge enemies and makes combat deadlier by increasing player and enemy damage.

Chill+
(Available from Nexus Mods[www.nexusmods.com] or Moddb with either vanilla or realistic combat.)

Chill+ tones down common annoyances like malaria and weapon degradation.

Insanity+
(Available from Nexus Mods[www.nexusmods.com] or Moddb with either vanilla or realistic combat.)

Insanity+ gives superhuman agility like super fast sprinting and crazy high jumping, so you can approach every encounter from a new perspective.
