And, to improve the game, which mod should I install? I've seen a lot of them but don't know which one to use.
If you want mods that change the game a bit then there are plenty to choose from, they're all easy to install so if you are bored of one just replace it with another. Redux and Tom's mod are pretty much the best options if you want something faithful to the original game, and if you want something harder you can go with G.O.R.E (Self-plug here since I made that) or Infamous Fusion (though the latest version released in 2017 and has it's share of bugs)

I'll have to tweak the Nexus download in the future to make the bin folder a separate download, gets annoying having to manually ask the site admins to verify every new version.
Along with Glam's response, what exactly do you mean by masks? Adding a physical Halloween mask wouldn't be possible but you could edit the NPC facial textures to show whatever you want.
Yep, all the texture edits are done to the xbts. When you say make them really look like masks I imagine removing their facial animation, which you can do in their relative xml (xx_buddies.xml for friendly npcs and xx_enemy_archetypes.xml for regular mercs). I've never tried that so not 100% what to delete but it should be in the CAnimationComponent section. I wasn't aware of removing facial features as an option, what's your plan with that?
For removing the facial features, I was thinking of following the same process mentioned in the Far Cry 2 modding guide (Adding the female mercenaries as playable characters - Step 4). In summary, open the xbg file then change the ".xbm" extension of facial/head features listed in it to ".x.m".
Ah yeh, I see what you're planning. The facial features aren't very incremental, so if I'm remembering correctly the xbm would give you the option to remove the hair, eyes, teeth or face skin. Have an experiment with those because it might look pretty buggy with some of them removed. Was that the kind of thing you were hoping to remove?
Cool, give it a try and please post some screenshots of what it looks like! If you want some help or find the modding guide confusing feel free to ask here.

There's been significant progress over the last two years, and in addition to everything above there are customisation options which include a complete ai-enhanced texture pack and a script which stops outposts from respawning the moment you leave the area (thank you to Scubrah).
Come and check out the mod pages for all the details, as there's way too many changes to list here.
There are multiple different versions of the mod available, each has a few key changes on top of everything listed so far:
Vanilla+ leaves the game's original combat unchanged, with its infamous bullet sponge enemies.
Realism+ removes the bullet sponge enemies and makes combat deadlier by increasing player and enemy damage.
Chill+ tones down common annoyances like malaria and weapon degradation.
Insanity+ gives superhuman agility like super fast sprinting and crazy high jumping, so you can approach every encounter from a new perspective.
