An Almost Complete Guide to Far Cry 2 Modding
This is an attempt to document and facilitate Far Cry 2 modding. The guide includes over a hundred pages on how to make all kinds of different modifications including editing weapons, vehicles, npcs, graphics etc. Also included are lots of guides that cover adding new features and more in depth changes also, including weapon holstering, weapon inspecting, friendly npc factions, shooting while driving etc. The guide is available online via Google docs, here.

The download includes a number of extras:

Tools - Unpacking/packing tools and a XML decoder. This is everything you need to do 90% of Far Cry 2 modding. Any other tools required are detailed in the guide.

Patch files - These include all the files you need to do all of the edits from the guide. There are two sets of patch files, one that just contains the necessary files and another that contains the same files but with pre-applied bug fixes and base features. All the details of these are in the download.

Optional additions - These are a selection of larger features that can be immediately dragged into the included patch files. The aim here is to make creating your Far Cry 2 mod's foundation as easy and customisable as possible.

File library - It's hard to know what versions of files are the best when adding to your mod, so I've included most of the ones you could need.

With all of this Far Cry 2 modding has never been easier. Feel free to post a comment if you need any help and I will assist ASAP.

Seems like a lot of folks that use a controller want to disable auto aim.

Thanks for sharing that, I'll definitely add it at some point. Real life is slowing me down at the moment, something about having to write a dissertation when I wish I could be doing far cry stuff.

Navigation man. - It's as simple as that.

You can master this game and move anywhere with impunity and ease. - Don't
let the game dominate you. Use the map and take control of the situation
everywhere you travel.

In this sim roads are meant to be trouble. - Avoid them as much as possible
or you'll have trouble every where you go. - Once you know the patrols well
you can time your actions to avoid them, but only for relatively short distances.

Get used to walking. - Checkpoints are for sneaking bye.

Learn how to choose your battles !

It's a great game - make it's faults work in your favor.

And DON'T RAZZ the mods who've done nothing but hard work to save and
improve the best damned shooter that was ever made.

These have taken a huge amount of time to get working. The vehicle ones are very buggy but also fun to use.

Is the shooting while in a vehicle thing the same approach as "that other mod", or is this like shooting in multiplayer?

It's the same approach but I found a much cleaner way of making it work. The shooting as a passenger animations are laid over the driver animations. It as janky as it sounds and shooting is still locked straight ahead but it's pretty fun using the m79. The shooting is also useful for breaking the windscreen so you can throw grenades through

Cool, I'll check it out.

I finally gave up on trying to get full passenger controls in SP after pulling my hair out for a week. I don't understand why it doesn't work, despite being able to sit in the seat by disabling the "forbidden" setting in gamemode.xml, and all of the inputs appearing to be enabled in the inputcommon. You can get in and out of the seat, but that's it. No other controls work at all, for me.

I'd just love to be able to sit in the passenger seat of the jeep and snipe from a hill, or something.

I didn't know there was anything like that in gamemode.xml. All of the scripting is in there so yeh I'm with you that in theory it wouldn't be that comlicated. I wonder why that wouldn't work!

The vehicle stuff is really complicated though. Add grenade throwing to regular mounted weapons was really simple but I just couldn't figure out doing it with vehicle mounted weapons.

You'll see what I mean by how janky it is. It isn't too bad with land vehicles but it's horrible with boats. Some of it just doesn't line up even for cars, like it doesn't seem like it possible for weapons to break in vehicles. I don't know if that could happen in multiplayer but with this system the broken weapons just stop working without blowing up.

I remember getting this game and the first time I played, I had similar complaints. It wasn't until late in the game, maybe the second playthrough, that I realized I could avoid 99% of the repetitive conflicts along the roads. It's almost like the game was trolling me.. the roads invited me to follow them, but then it was just annoying. It wasn't until I learned how to drive past 75% of them, or sneak past 99% of them that I really started having loads of fun!! :-)

Ah - for quite a while I felt restricted and inhibited by the constant threats. Now I launch
into every task without hesitation and quite a bit of zeal knowing that no area is beyond
relatively easy reach and no encounter that is beyond my abilities to deal efficiently with.
Often the most difficult challenges are the most rewarding.
