I agree: Silencers cause appropriately muffled shots. All stealth features that were included work perfectly. Patience is key. Anything other than headshots cause enemies to vocalize, so yes, still best even with dart gun.
The range and trajectories need reworked (especially MGL-140, dart, and crossbow). [Edited: M79 seems good to me]
The whole bit where enemies "know" what area to search for a stealther, boggles the mind: Score an undetected dart kill at flank A, circumnavigate map to flank B (no one able to see body, or see character) and enemies come anyway, but sometimes it works correctly. This is another reason FC2 is more of a stalking human prey, than stealth game.
[add- doh' here I said that what features are include, are so great... shame on me.]
It is odd how they put so much attention into certain details and immersion, then totally ignore some other element, like the anti-grav dart you mention.
Four quasi-ghost completions in Bowa Seko's Dogon Village; "quasi" because two were assassinations and another requires destruciton of kiln. Sneaking through to grab a briefcase was pure ghost though (no suspicion, alert, kill), but off mission.
Tips:
Hug the right or left cliffs flanking Dogon, unless a clear path down streets is warranted.
Look for small gaps between cliffs and buildings, hop through and hide while partol passes.
In all cases, escape was via hanglider.
Headphones: Without HUD elements & cornering features, they are invaluable.
-turn facing left and right to localize the direction of sounds.
- - - - -
Beware of FC2 Limitations (Cornering & Tracking):
No way to check corners wthout being detected (lean-n-peak, thrid-person camera, fiberoptic, camera, drone, mirror, radar, X-ray, or AI delayed reaction). So, any enemy facing character will auto detect upon view. This requires reload, or E&E to return after map cell resets.
Tip:
Play on Hardcore or lower with reticle turned on; creep around corner and watch for reticle to change color (may detect enemy through the wall/corner). If so, abort path, or swap from ghost to stealth-kill run.
Example:
Night, crouched, long range, up on a hill, camo, grass, in & out of a broad-leaf bush, out of LOS except for rocketeer which is facing away.
Fire a dart against an object on far side of rocketeer; ensure that he can hear the impact.
Notice the rocketeer abrubtly change facing and stare directly at character.
The rest of camp may become alert and actively search for character.
Expect one or usually more to eventually move to player's location.
Note: Results vary, even if reloading a save from point of attack. I'm not sure why, but variance keeps the game fresh; usually the in-bush method is best. Sometimes get eye-balled, sometimes swarmed, sometimes both, even attacked. What will happen? Nobody knows. The rocketeer may even twitch around aiming wildly, but interestingly, look up at the character (elevating sight angle notably).
Tips:
Use silenced single head-shots for stealth kills, don't have multiple projectiles impacting area.
Avoid using distractions, since AI knows player location, as per example.
Learn how far apart enemies must be so noise from head-shot stealth kills isn't noticed.
As stated previously, any body-shots, even with darts, cause a loud cry. Hit the head.
Example: Since enemies know our rough location, let's use it against them...
Night, crouched, camo, grass, bush (broad-leaf seems best).
Find a solo enemy, so only one responds. All others should be out of range (vision/hearing).
Stand/crouch cycle to get his attention, visual lure.
Creep back into another bush/bushes.
Attack the ground with machete as an audible lure, beware of repeating visual lures.
Repeat as necessary to lure enemy behind a solid obstruction (if he gives up search).
Repeats may not be required if the AI has truly locked on character (typically during alerts).
Kill enemy with single silenced headshot, preferably while flanked.
Typically, this attack and corpse will go unnoitced.
Warnings:
At any time, another enemy may run directly to body, even from very far away, and trigger alert. I don't know why.
If reloading saves, it is best to load one from before the battle. Otherwise, strange alerts may crop up.
At any time, an AI"s patrol path may discover the body anyway, so hide them far away.
Although a corpse is useful to bait more prey, they will probably incite an alert, even if stealth killed cleanly, so plan to relocate anyway. Perahps it is a timing issue with AI, that the notification is sent too soon when investigating?
Tips:
Although the character with camo can hide in grass and bushes quite well, the AI seems to ignore such foliage when spotting corpses. Attempting to hide boides in concelament, rather than solid cover typically fails.
They can detect and attack player charater through foliage of trees, even multiple trees.
Their detection range is extreme in some cases, like daylight, while the PC is driving. Once detected, their attack range in some cases has been further than I can see them with a scope.
Mortars are especially hazardous, since they are omniscient once PC is detected. They require no spotter, and will correct aim to track character. Although true of rifle and rocket, cover won't help vs. mortars.
Mortars may even join a fight, across hills and cliffs, if fighting other enemies from another area, but close enough to be in range. I guess a bombardment gets called in?
Tips:
Use the monocular if they are suspected to be in a sniper stand. It will provide the green highlight and mark its location on map (if they are still alive). Not all stands can be identified though.
Play on Hardcore or lower difficulty, with reticle active. Pan the foliage and watch for the reticle to change color to help pin-point location.
Concealment, even with grass, bush, camo, and remaining stationary may fail. These enemies have incredible detection abilities. Watch them carefully and move when they are looking away. Solid cover to block LOS is prefered.
Night time with poor weather is our friend. The visual distance decreases. The air will look thick in a scope, like fog.
Carl G rockets are guided, kill the shooter. Watch the rocket go crazy as it tracks the LOS from the tumbling corpse or possibly weapon sight.
Keep a solid piece of cover somewhat between rocketeers and character, at a respectable distance. Use this cover to intercept rockets, but stay well back.
Mortars won't explode in water (may be depth dependant, not fully tested), so get wet and keep moving. A boat is a bigger target than a body. Get in close ASAP if all else fails.
Beware of sniper alleys, such as Bowa Seko, East Grid, on the river. Expect overlapping fields of vision/fire.
If under attack through tree foliage (typically rifle snipers):
- Try to track trajectory of attacks for general location.
- Use solid cover to intercept attacks.
- Time their reloads for moving and spotting.
- The best idea? GTFO and return on a different route or reload.
Even with durability upgrade, it fails fast. If it jams, expect it to break soon, even on the next shot.
I've had it break a few times and still take down the enemy during that shot. I assume it always will.
I did a quick spot-check and fired it repeatedly at the marina. No jams, but the 26th shot broke it.
Enemies hear the shot and hit from pretty far, takes a bit of getting used to for stealthing. I'm unsure if no muzzle flash plays any role in this game, hard to tell so far.
As stated before, only headshots are silent kills, body shots cause target to cry out and alert others.
Bolt Action, pretty long lag between shots.
As pointed out by Lord Elbmek of Mars, anti-grav darts are obscenely useful.
Scope and perhiperal vision outside of scope graphics is nice. Cross hairs are thin, which is also great.
Tips:
When sneaking around blind areas, like through a dense area of bushes, equip the Dart Rifle, and point where walking. If bumping into an unseen enemy, just fire it blindly from the hip. They may yell out, but any hit (even on an appendage) will take them out, then relocate fast. Works best on Hardcore or lower difficulty, with reticle active; if it changes color, think about shooting before actually bumping into someone.
Keep a spare Dart Rifle in safehouse storage:
Swap out if on an extended missions away from the weapon shack.
Loaded weapons in cases provide ammo in a pinch (not much gain in this case, one shot).
Functions well as a sealth weapon. One shot to the head reliably kills, but body shots will burn through clips fast.
Fire rate is high enough to disrupt enemy's aim and even stagger them at times. Always aim for the head though.
Sights are awful. small black nubs which are extremely difficult to read in a dark and stormy night, especially with a dark target. Center the sights on target, not muzzle.
No weapon zoom when using the iron sights (hold LB on X360). There are other weapons that give a slight zoom, even without a scope, so this weapon requires more skill and practice.
I've never had one break when using durability upgrade and stealthing for single shots, provided that I replaced it regularly. Firefighting has caused it to break, but why did I use the wrong tool for the wrong job?
I use this the whole game, love it.
Tips:
Shoot enemies from beyond their range, with no path to reach character or extreme range; after they hide and hunker down, flank and mop up with 6P9. The enemys' detection abilities plummet while hunkered. Look for them crouched over and even running around virtually blind (seems like very narrow and short vision cone).
Better sights? Aim with a scoped weapon, like the Dart Rifle's ultra-thin cross hairs, swap weapons to the 6P9 and shoot, but beware, see warnings:
Warnings: This first tip has finite range. If attempted too far, the sighting andle will change upon swapping weapons (dropping in elevation). To test: Aim with scope, swap to pistol, and back to scope; if still on target, it is safe to use pistol. Additionally, this trick onlly works on non-fidgety targets... if the enemy is alert and twitchy, just aim with iron sights and pray, otherwise it may take too long and they'll move.
Buddy rescues may remove the active secondary gun and replace it with a loaner, so:
Quickly change to the machete if near death, so the silenced pistol is not replaced.
If it is replaced, keep a spare in the safehouse storage, if far from weapon shacks.
Not good. Enemies yell out, bodies drop loudly, then if not dead, enemies continue to be loud. I've never gotten a stealth kill yet (without alerts/suspicions), except for very isolated enemies.
Dart Rifle is better for sneaking through dense areas of bushes, since one shot shuts them up. The machete may require a follow up, which is time best spent relocating. Butt, in a pinch... yeah, I said it, and your butt will really be in it... the Rifle needs reloading, machete doesn't.
Tips:
If driving a grenade launcher vehicle, or an M2 fitty-cal, the enemies may be too close for grenade (unless aiming beyond them), or too low for the M2. If hand-held weapons are depleted, or not good ideas (IED, MGL-140, Mortar, etc.), use the machete as the enemies disembark.
If a bad shot in firefights like me, swing it around, but expect to get shot up.
Use it to conserve ammo, "Coup de grâce".
Use it to open boarded up areas.
See how much these tips relate to stealth? :D
I love this guide, found it this week, giving it a plug.
Know your enemy (stealth mechanics and the tactical approach)

Really? Yep. Even though this seems wrong, it is so right. I admit it is quite a stretch though :D
Tips:
First, turn off the headlights at night. On X360, tap the RB. This dereases the enemy ability to see vehicles by a wide margin. Get the drop on 'em; this is more stealthy than them ;)
Practice the timing so lights never even flash on during engine startup. Those lights are visible from a long ways off.
Second, stop before an expected fight and point the turret in the desired direction. Forward if running into other vehicles, or shelling a forward encampment; aim it rearward if running a checkpoint and expecting followers, or staging an escape from an assassination. The time spent turning turret during fights may cost your life.
Now that the vehicle is more stealthy and prepped, decide how to use it. Get out and hide in a bush while enemies pass by? Coast down a hill quietly while in turret? Race through checkpoint full throttle while changing to turret? Roll up short and quiet, then shell the hell out of them? Drive off road and circumvent the checkpoint? Disembark quietly, dart the sniper (rifle, rocket, mortar), then race through? Pull off road and sit quietly at idle, ready to race off? Sit off road in turret, ready for contact?
If unsure about enemy drivers up ahead, swap to turret (shut down engine and listen).
Time saved by driving can be invaluable: Reach a target before a stormy night comes to an end.
On X360, change between driver and turret with "A", no need to disembark.
The stealth action is over and all hell has broken loose. Maybe it is time to flee down a road. Remember to look back (downward press of RS on X360). Knowing when to evade can be invaluable, like when the roar of a Carl G rocket is heard.
A: This is a common problem, the more enemies, the more tromping around. It is only a matter of time and the odds are against us. Even camo may fail in lush grass and bushes, if enemies get too close and/or they focus, or if the character makes a sound or move.
Tips:
Which bush? Be aware of enemy pathing. Selecting a bush, on the inside turn? Not a good idea, since the AI will take the shrotest path. Go to the outside instead.
Always think about AI pathing. If possible get someplace they cannot walk, with grass, bush, and preferably solid cover. An ideal location is to find an obscure ledge that requires creative methods to reach, better to look down than be looked down upon.
Get as far away as possible, always have another fallback in mind. Dead ends are bad. Rooftops are bad if they can gain LOS (no foliage). Trapped against cliffs is less than desirable, so retreat through openings of boxed in areas. In buildings isn't generally good, unless foliage is present or just breaking LOS.
If necessary, continue to circumnavigate a confined area: Kill, roate clockwise (or counter-clockwise), repeat. Once bodies are littered everywhere, the enemies may perpetually re-alert themselves.
Don't press your luck. Kill one, maybe two if baiting someone with the corpse, but relocate before getting swarmed. I get caught often due to greed.
When in doubt, increase range... the further the better.
Bush type? Broad-leaf seems best. Juniper types with long thin foliage is not as secure. Thorny thin foliage is less so. Stay away from dead bushes. I've had success unexpectedly in the broad spear and frond shaped plants, even the stunted tree like bushes.
Grass or bushes? Although bushesa are better, use both, rather than one or the other. Add the Camo upgrade ASAP.
It is possible to let a straggler see PC (slow inquisitive state), fade through concealment, then flank and sneak up while they are going to where the PC used to be. Their head should hold still while they study intently. This works great in large rolling grasslands with scattered bushes. Similarly, follow them after giving up on a high alert (frantic searching), shoot a straggler, then get far away (fast but stealthily). Similarly, follow someone running, but beware of his friends following.
Against an obstruction (in grass and bush) will eliminate one flank to watch and one direction for random enemys to bumble through.
Nothing but sand? Break LOS with solid cover, this includes rolling terrain. Show as little of character's body as possible over a horizion, preferably with only one enemy in view, dart them, slink back down hill if necessary, and then relocate.
Move in bushes/grass when being eye-balled? Try no to. Moement drastically risks detection, even if creeping.
When relocating, try to keep some cover or concealment between character and enemy, stay low and in thick grass (if available).
Be ware of turning in place. If wearing headphones, it is easy to hear rustling, if turning to far.
Make enemies hunker down and decrease numbers with long ranged sniper fire (stealthy darts or loud). Flank, sneak in and mop up with silencers. Behaviors vary, if they don't hunker down, atleast there are fewer to sneak around. If all aggresive pursuit AI are eliminated, the remainders should be hunkering.
Pray for rain, it helps a lot.
Plan B: If giving up on stealth, go loud and proud with grenades and molotovs to disorient the enemies, but this may mean E&E or firefight.
