Splash Screen Potential Fix (Win 10/Multiple Disks)
Hey all,

I'd just like to make it known that in trying to fix the bug where the game opens the splash screen on start up, and then instantly closes the program, there is a fix that I've encountered. The issue itself persisted regardless of setting the game on Dx9 or Dx10, which can be changed outside of the game after the first attempted start up at the config file located in C:/User/(Username)/Documents/My Games/Far Cry 2/GamerProfile.xml on the OS disk.

If your game is installed on a different disk, like say a Steam Library on the D: drive, the game will try to start up and then crash to desktop after the splash screen. However, once the game is moved to the same disk as the Gamerprofile file, the game starts up as normal with the gamer profile settings. To change the location of the game, simply right click on the game in the steam library, go to the local files tab, and click move install folder from the D drive library to the desired location in the C drive. The game should then work on startup as expected.

My hypothesis for this issue is that since the game is originally on a separate file directory to the Gamerprofile.xml, it searches for the profile in the D: drive rather than C: and fails to open. Another possibility may be a more ingrained logic error somewhere in the game like in Skyrim, where it has to be installed on the OS disk to properly access certain sound effects. If anyone more knowledgeable about the software structure of games has any thoughts, I would like to hear what your thoughts are as well.

In any case, I will try shifting the gamerprofile and game files collectively back to the HDD to see if they will play nice on the much larger storage drive, since the SSD in my particular system is only 128 GB. I will update the thread with the results.

Rig Specs:
Windows 10 OS
AMD FX-8350 processor @4.1 GHz
ASUS M5A99FX Mobo
Gskill 2X8GB RAM @ 1866
Sapphire R9 390X Graphics Card
Samsung 840 120GB SSD
4X Western Digital 1TB drives in RAID 10

Man, - if you're here to help people - I'm thrilled !

Haven't seen your handle here before so -> WELCOME to the Forum !

I know that FC2 is an ancient game, and this place is a thinly populated backwater
compared to other forums, but we truly love the game and because of this games
age and newer hardware many new to the game need help from time to time.

- Thanks ! - for your contributions thus far. - Hope to see your handle here again
when needed.

- Best Wishes -

Can you PLEASE sticky either the Multi-Fixer tool guide, or sticky a post informing new players that they should cap their framerate to prevent bugs?

This FPS related issue, which the community has fixed, was even highlighted in Digital Foundry's recent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUlt7CGRSIA

Good point. - I's the most commonly posted, and that's why it's the first subject listed
in my guide. - Also, it's important to include how to run in steam. - Anyone can access
it from my profile page if they're interested.

- Thanks for the suggestion - !

Here's all the info - taken directly from the Guide :

- ★To Assure that you don't end up with GAME ENDING BUGS ★ -
Imagine working through 40 hours or more only to loose it all at 84% complete.
I've been through it twice, and I'd hate to see anyone suffer the pain when this
simple fix is available :

Always launch the game using FoxAheads' Multi-Fixer. - Well tested and
has added options to set FOV - and more -

Thanks ! - to:

Update
New version 1.9.0.50
https://github.com/FoxAhead/Far-Cry-2-Multi-Fixer/releases/tag/v1.9
Changes:

Better version detection from dunia.dll with changed size.
If somehow dunai.dll size was changed, try to find the version string explicitly.

Important ! - How to run in steam:

Put the multifix launcher in your Far Cry 2 Bin folder
Rename FarCry2.exe to FarCry2Game.exe
Rename the Multi-Fix launcher to FarCry2.exe

In your steam library there's a listing on the left
right click on the game and select properties

Path should look something like this:

"-exe "Drive" :/Games/steamaps/common/Far Cry 2/Bin/FarCry2.exe"
Change to "-exe "Drive" :/Games/steamaps/common/Far Cry 2/Bin/FarCry2Game.exe"

Done.

You'll know it works when you launch. - A new menu appears with some extra launch
options including set FOV.

Leave max frames unless you want to chance bouncing AI and a dozen more glitches,
some that can ruin your progress.

Added Info generously supplied by Hunter - Thanks !

Both of these things are done by right clicking > properties of the fc2.exe file.

Hello there!

Thanks for the welcome, thirdkeeper! It's great to see that the players within this forum have such a love and enthusiasm for Far Cry 2. The player support team hope to help out with any questions or concerns our players encounter whilst playing Far Cry 2 :)

Thanks for sharing the suggestion to make a sticky post regarding the Multi-fixer tool, Hunter. Please note that Ubisoft Support is unable to promote the use of 3rd party software as a workaround, as this can conflict with game files[support.ubisoft.com] and cause issues running the game. As such, we won't be able to create a sticky post sharing this suggestion.

Players are welcome to try your suggestions, but they would be doing so at their own risk, and Ubisoft Support will be unable to assist regarding any issues that may result from using third-party software to modify game files in an unauthorised way.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out or open a new thread :)

That you're taking the time to respond is greatly appreciated -

I have no argument with the above and I would like to point out that from what i
understand the Multi-Fixer doesn't affect the executable, merely sets safe parameters
to launch, incorporating the same basic fixes that have been posted separately here,
(Limits FPS etc.) and has no record (that I've seen here) of adverse affects.

The over arching issue is the fact that the most common complaints from mouse jitter
to bouncing AI, missing KEY players and corrupted save files. The same questions that
we've seen repeatedly here for the past few years are all solved with this one tool.

I've seen too many say "Game is glitchy as hell, A crappy port, Crashes on start up -
Uninstalling - Getting a refund".

It's discouraging. People I've purchased the game for have had the same reaction,
and we always end up posting the same answers over and over.

Some here have been promoting the game for a long time, and it's discouraging to
see potential players turned off and missing out on this unique edition of the FC series.

I would strongly encourage the devs to examine Multi-Fix to establish it's utility.

It's understood that Ubi cannot promote or endorse, but with the owners permission
could incorporate in the install. - Since it is non-intrusive it could easily be keyed to
run at launch.

It would solve nearly all the negative impressions, save the company from complaints
and returns, the more that enjoy it the more that recommend it - broadening their
customer base ( for a 14 year old game! ) and save us poor slobs from near constant
management.

Now, - if the swells (ancient expression) can't see the benefits or 'can't be bothered'
could there be at least a suggestion to "Set FPS to 60" "Turn Vsync On" "Run in DX 9"
somewhere in that 'Help' post pinned at the top of this forum? If those simple fixes
exist - they're buried somewhere in the links, yet they solve the most common issues.

- It would certainly make it easier for us, we could at least point to the 'Help' post
with confidence.

Hoping you have a clearer picture of why the request was made.

- Thanks very much for your considerate attention -

Thanks for your suggestions, thirdkeeper. I've passed along the feedback that you've shared within this thread regarding Multi-Fix to the dedicated teams.

Creating a pinned thread about other well-known troubleshooting steps and tips is a great idea! I've spoken to my colleagues about this, and I've now created a new pinned thread. This thread includes a lot of the common troubleshooting steps and tips I found shared within the forums, including the suggestions you've shared above.

We've decided to keep this thread open so the community can share any troubleshooting steps we may have missed. If you have any other suggestions of known workarounds or troubleshooting steps that we haven't shared in that thread, please feel free to add a comment to the thread! Just keep in mind that we are unable to promote the use of the Multi-Fixer tool, as well as any additional 3rd party software.

Thanks!

Wonderful news ! - This is what I built the Crew for and why I made the Guide.
Having the most utilized info easily accessible and in a single location instead
of having to search for it across dozens of threads scattered over several years
of posts.

I think that some have missed the point because there will still remain the
disappointments complaints and returns, and we'll still be dealing with the
dissatisfaction here, but at least the info is localized right here in the forum
for all.

I know that I speak for many in expressing my gratitude for the teams receptivity
and consideration in taking action to ease these issues. - THANK You ! - 8 )

Very grateful for your measured administrations,

- Best Wishes -
