Stuck on studious bug

Made it to the part where you get the fourth bug. The game gives you a little graphic explaining that you can teach your bug to follow food you hold. It even gives you two hints when you fail to do so. I still can't seem to figure out how to make them more studious at all. Everything just seems to make them more athletic.

Lose a bunch of minigames on purpose and only drop the food in, don't have them chase it. Takes a while to get it down, but it does eventually.

I'll try again thanks. I was doing that and the meter wasn't moving at all.

Yeah you reach a point where it just seems like it is *not* going to go down, but it does eventually creep left just enough to get to where you need it to be. After that your studious bug drops more facts for the remainder of its life so there's that lol

How many mini-games lost are we talking about here? I must have lost at least 10 and only dropped food in, and it hasn't moved an inch (I thought the big expensive food might be better but maybe not if it's tracking only number of snacks dropped rather than accounting for quality). Not easy to tell if you're doing the right thing. It was very easy to make them athletic.

My shiny mantis died before I could make it studious ;-( I feel like I wasted its life dying to minigames over and over (like I must have done 15-20 times?), and with the sleep time and the minigame timeouts, I didn't have time to get the meter down before it died.

It only started going down once I got the explicit instruction (Rather than the hint), but that was long after I'd started doing what I needed to, so not sure what the delay was about.

Time to try again using cheaper food, I guess?

On the plus site, the mantises are gorgeous and Keto Meato is an AWESOME minigame

Tried again with a new mantis and it worked fine, only took like 5 minigames and 3 cheap food drops. Quite confused about earlier but happy I'll be able to progress!
