You can also shift+clic if you want to bypass the shield things.
That being said, there are times you do have enough firepower, but you're either not aiming directly at the target (even though the result would be the same), or the target checking you is more than a space away. I've had runs where I had the scope active (just about perfect accuracy), plenty of firepower, but I still had to go through my shields before I could take the shot, which killed the piece.
