I was *this* close to considering pre-ordering
But then I realised two things:

  1. Closed Beta Access is only available on PS5/Xbox Series X|S- in due partly to NRS handling only those versions(QLOC is handling the PC port again; this also means delayed support, as with MK11)
  2. "Dragon Krystals"- as with MK11, the game is launching with MTX baked into the game. We can assume that it will have progression/grind issues similar to MK11.

The second one is a bigger deal breaker than the first as it's a core design issue with the game. It sucks because we know that WB Games can release a game without microtransactions and still make bank (case in point- Hogwarts Legacy).

I dunno, I find it pretty insulting to pay full price for a game and have the publisher deem my purchase unworthy enough for them to demand I purchase fake currency to "skip the grind" and access the content I paid full price for in the first place. Though, clearly, the system is working or else they wouldn't roll it out again.

I love fighting games, especially MK and I was close to pre-order too but the suddenly leaked 3 (!) superheroes dlc makes me disappointed, I'm still hesitating... I don't care about they gameplay just keep the superheroes out of the Mortal Kombat universe. I thought with the fresh restart NetherRealm will make a loveletter to the fans not an MK vs. DC superheroes 2...

Premium Edition includes Kombat Pack, 1 week early access to downloadable content characters, and 1250 Dragon Krystals (In-game Currency).

Jesus Christ MTX is in MK? I haven't played one since Deception for PS2, but I'm sad they went that route. I always said I'd rather pay full price up front than have MTX in a game. Now it looks like we have to do both. Hard pass.

Yeah, that's right. It started with MKX, technically. They had a DLC that unlocks all the items in the Krypt. MK11 went one step further with "Time Krystals". Basically, they have a rotating shop that has customisation items and "easy fatalities"(consumable tokens to execute a fatality in a match with a simple button press) etc. And the entire progression for unlocking stuff is designed around this.

Either you grind countless hours to get random customisation (it's literally RNG for most of it) or you wait until the item you want is in the Time Krystal store and you purchase it outright.

I think it's safe to assume (but will admit there's no formal confirmation) that it will be the same in MK1

I would have thought the ACTUAL issue with pre-ordering would be...dun dun dun!...actually seeing gameplay and how it works but yea okay...whatever nonsense you said. An IP is one thing but whether it'll be fun or not is completely different and I'll take Fun and monetized over complete but boring horses*** anyday.

Well, tbh, NRS has proven their pedigree with gameplay. There's no doubt that it won't be at the very least serviceable. Plus, as (speaking for myself) a longtime fan of the series it's known that there have been many different iterations of gameplay. Everything from simple sprite based 2D, 3D movement with weapons, to meter based 2D fighting. The series has gone through many changes from a gameplay standpoint. Most people still playing after all these years will get it just because of the name. Gameplay is pretty irrelevant for fans (to a degree).

And anyway, "fun" is totally subjective.

All this is a turn off. That and Battle Passes & pre-order characters.

I dunno if you're new to fighting games or not but those things (yearly passes for characters etc. and "bonus" pre-order characters) are pretty much standardised now (sadly). It's not just this game (series) that does that now

I mean actual Battle Passes.

Pre-order characters were never standard, huh?

Well, there's no indication that this game has a battle pass system, so that's entirely speculation. All we know is it has a season pass with 6 characters and 5 Kameo fighters (and an in-game currency system).

Well, with MK alone, MKX had Goro has a pre-order bonus. MK11 had Shao Kahn. Plenty of other fighting games do things like this too. It's pretty standard for fighting games now (not that that makes it okay, just unsurprising).

Yeah and MK Mobile tie in with 11 and I think 10 as well? Which is super MTX p2w lol. I'm pretty much in the same boat, was like, okay 100 bucks edition, whats in it.... oh no...... nevermind. Now I'm just here on the forums ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lol

Dunno which part you're referring to but, as for other NRS games, Darkseid was a pre-order bonus for Injustice 2.

As for other fighting games;

Eliza was a pre-order bonus for Tekken 7
Nyotengu was an "early purchase" bonus for Dead or Alive 6
SSGSS Goku and SSGSS Vegeta were early unlock bonuses for Dragon Ball FighterZ

Guilty Gear Strive and Steet Fighter V/6 among other games had colours as pre-order bonuses

Not a comprehensive list but just a few examples to Illustrate the point; pre-order bonuses in fighting games is not a new or recent idea. It's been going on for years and pretty much is standard at this point (again, not that I condone that)

Ah no. I am pretty sure that only MK gives a character on launch as a pre-order bonus. Tekken, SF, Guilty Gear, etc have season passes, but they don't offer a character on day one as Pre-Order bonus.

Well, I never said that Street Fighter or Guilty Gear have character pre-order bonuses because they don't. Those games have costume colours as pre-order bonuses.

In Tekken's case, you just have to visit the store page for Eliza to see that it was a pre-order bonus (as that's what the purchase box lists the DLC as, in name;

https://store.steampowered.com/app/592370/TEKKEN_7_Eliza_Character/

The release date trailer for the game announced Eliza as a pre-order bonus too;

Yeah. Tekken came out in March. Eliza was a June release. That's not a day one bonus.

Sure it is pretty much semantics at this point, but from what I know only MK has offered characters as Pre-Oder bonus, that were available day one.

Dead or Alive 6 is just... that isn't even a fighting game, but a clothing shop. Dunno if it even counts anymore.
