Is MK 1 using Unreal Engine 3 again?
It's well documented that MK 11 was built using UE3.

At this point it's a 15 year+ old game engine (circa November 2007)

MK1 is cited in their FAQ to be using "NetherRealm Studios technology". Is this possibly just a heavily modified version of the UE3 engine?

Many modern games now simply state "Built using Unreal Engine 5" which leads me believe it's actually just heavily modified UE3 engine game.

From the official FAQs:
"All versions of Mortal Kombat 1 are built on NetherRealm Studios technology with oversight by NetherRealm"

Pretty sure it is. Go check out the system requirements.... No top of the line hardware needed, but then the big one.... "100gb space required"....

Which game had almost the same bloated filesize, because NRS abuses an old engine with 0 compression?... Oh yeah, it's MK11.

Meanwhile Street Fighter 6 is 60, even the latest CoD is 120.

Considering that this is looking to be a PS5/Switch cross-gen game, I think it's safe to assume that UE3 will be in play.

Also, friendly reminder that the engine is 17 years old now, and Epic Games has long since discontinued tech support for developers using it. Because of its age and the fact that it's now unsupported, it should be worth mentioning that MK1 would need to play around UE3's content ceiling. What happens if you ignore said ceiling? Just look at Killing Floor 2 to find out! it runs like absolute garbage, and you need to mess around with .ini configs to get any amount of playable performance

I'm more curious as to whether or not Netherrealm will take engine limitations into consideration when developing the base game while also making sure there's enough room for DLC without breaking things.

Reason I'm saying this is because KF2 pushed Unreal Engine 3 to its absolute hard limits when it first released in 2016, and has since been bloated with 6 years worth of additional content. With the expectation that MK1 will be a next-gen Mortal Kombat game, it makes me wonder if Netherrealm will push UE3 as strenuously as Tripwire did 6 years ago.

The minimum GPU they recommend is a GTX980, I assume so. Lower specs than SF6.

For 89.99 CAD. They better be using UE5.

UE4. After mk11 they said they move to UE4

If the above link is truthful, then it reinforces my thoughts that the trailer we saw was actually "in engine".

It would be a trivial matter for UE5 to make MK1 look like what the trailer looks like. UE5 is ungodly.

My point is, why not just state "Built using UE5" or "the latest Unreal Engine technology" instead of "NetherRealm Studios technology"

"NetherRealm Studios technology" to me sounds like something bespoke/proprietary that they have cooked up.

Just go look at the system specs. It's Unreal 3 unless they confirm otherwise with in-game footage.

Maybe it will look good visually since they moved from recommend GTX1060 (in mk11) to 1080ti which is a huge leap. If Shang tsung preorder clip is in engine then it does look quiet impressive. Shadows, lightning, hair, subsurface scattering for skin all look like UE5 tech.

Doesn't matter if it "looks good visually". The more important thing is that the game can actually run decently. As i've mentioned before, UE3 has a limited content budget, and advanced graphical features can take away from this.

compression has nothing to do with the engine

This. Pretty sure they need to keep up with the times. Using UE3 would be stupid. It looks more like this will be first MK in UE5.

Except UE5 can't run on the Nintendo Switch, and UE4 scales extremely poorly on it.

UE3 was how Netherrealm was able to get all versions of MK11 (PS4/XB1, PC, Switch) to run at a smooth 60FPS.

Epic Games has also confirmed that Unreal Engine 5 will work on all platforms its predecessor Unreal Engine 4 also ran on, including Android, iOS, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.

"Unlike UE4, however, the new iteration of the engine isn't a clean break from the past. It has the same system targets as UE4, meaning it'll run on anything from the most high-end PCs to old Android and iOS devices, encompassing current-gen consoles too - including Switch. "

Are they gonna take scalability into factor? UE4 on Switch was done as an afterthought, and if most PS4/Switch multiplats are of any indication, the engine scales down very poorly on lower-end hardware. I expect similar problems to happen with UE5, so yeah. I'm thinking that Netherrealm will stick to UE3 in order to get that 60FPS on Switch, even if the game ends up having more content than the engine supports after a couple of updates.
