There are no health bars by default. If you want to see how much health an enemy has, you have to use the analyse skill from the scholar class.

The name-plates changes color depending on how much health a boss have left.

Think of it like yellow = 50, red 10ish.

Red is 25%.

You can also use Collect/Steal on most enemies to see an approximation. They have been reduced by 5% less than the percentage shown (so if they have 20% left, it'll show 75% chance to steal)

Strange workaround for a feature that a player sees as normal. It is getting tedious very soon unfortunately…

Welcome to JRPGs! :)

One thing you'll note is that, unlike Adventure RPGs, JRPGs don't typically include health bars. So, as others have noted, you can get a detailed view using the Analyze skill from the Scholar Job or get a general idea from the color of the boss name.

What the heck is an 'Adventure RPG'?

I feel like that's not true at all. Persona, Final Fantasy, Tales, Bravely Default, Shin Megami Tensei, almost every JRPG I know of has health bars. Even Octopath CotC has health bars, so there is precedent for them in this series. Unless you are actually going with the "they aren't health 'bars', they are health 'numbers'", which would obviously be silly, you'll need to cite some of these "typical JRPGs". Sometimes you have to perform an inspect command on the enemy before the health shows, like in this game, but the health display is typically permanent after that.

It doesn't really make sense that it isn't permanent in this game; you know their exact health number when you inspect them, and you could just manually add and subtract health from that number according to the healing and damage numbers shown on screen to get their exact health at all times. That isn't hidden information, just information that would be tiresome to track, which is why most games with such a mechanic don't hide it at that point. It hasn't mattered that much to me, but it does seem somewhat pointless.

Dragon Quest is the "typical RPG" and most DQ games do not have health bars -- in fact, DQXI has colored named to give a rough indication of enemy health, just like the OT games. (also, even within the series that you listed, there are many entries that do not have health bars)

I think it's kind of silly to have them just because they add visual clutter but have very little useful purpose. How does knowing whether a monster has 80% vs. 70% of their life left change what you do in combat? Sure, it can be useful to know when a boss is almost dead because sometimes you want to try to take a risk and neglect safety in order to burn it down... and having their name change to red when they're under 25% is still a perfectly good indicator for that.

no i think the japanese devs are just stuck in the past (like the japanese society), refuse to innovate or move forward (like the japanese society) and dumb

I'm thinking Secret of Mana or Zelda.

I was referring to enemy health bars. Final Fantasy 1-6, for example, don't have visible enemy health bars.

And in Octopath, while you can see an enemy's numeric health, it will cost you an action to do so and the information isn't permanently displayed. So it's not information that's meant to be displayed for free and has more in common with the traditional JRPGs like the Final Fantasy series on the NES/SNES/FAMICOM.

CotC is a weird hybrid of JRPG graphics in a mobile game, so I don't think it's relevant.

Which ones? Honest question, since I'm curious to know.

Final Fantasy 1-6, Dragon Quest, Legend of Dragoon, Golden Sun, Breath of Fire. I can think of half a dozen more that stick to the formula, but I don't remember any that had visible boss bars.
