Weird Softlock When Unlocking Second Key

I don't entirely know how to explain this one, and I wasn't able to reproduce it after I reloaded my save. But the gist of it:
Load my save
Talk to bird NPC and give them the first letter.
Talk to Tavern NPC.
Be told about the second exit after the Crypt.
Talk to Matthew
Give 2 sparks (always picked the right-most spark, I had 3 in my inventory)
Hold B to exit menu
Instead of normal dialogue, this portrait of Purse pops up and it's impossible to progress the dialogue, enter any menus, or otherwise advance the game.

I hit Alt+F4 to force close the game, reloaded, opened up OBS and tried to reproduce the steps, but when I did the Matthew stuff, the game proceeded normally from there. So.... no idea what caused that,

Just had another softlock immediately after defeating this bird. Just like the above scenario, doesn't matter if I use gamepad or keyboard from this point on, none of the menus react to inputs anymore and I have to force-close the game.

If it helps any, I'm alternating between a save file on my PC that I play exclusively with an Xbox One controller, and a save file on my Steam Deck. these softlocks may be specifically related to the gamepad controls somehow?

Got the "Purse Icon" softlock again. Seems to have something with pressing the A button to confirm too quickly after turning in an item to Matthew that would trigger a Mathew dialogue scene.

I'm starting to think it's impossible to finish the story? I've done all six dungeon areas now, but when I check back with Matthew he's just like "There's nothing more to unlock, but you didn't see the full depths" and I'm like. But I did though????

I haven't finished as much of the story mode as you have, you're clearly much further than I am, but one thing I've seen mentioned in other threads is that you have to complete the dungeons as all 5 characters before later stuff is unlocked.

Endless mode specifically was what I was looking up when I found that info, but I assume there's other content locked behind beating it with the other characters. Maybe you need to beat all the dungeons as all 5 characters to move forward with Matthew too?

You probably have already tried this though. Apologies if so, just something that came to mind and figured I'd mention it

EDIT: Do you know if the mayor's dialogue got fixed? (the one from your last screenshot posted). I just started that "quest" chain and I keep seeing people post this bug so I'm wondering if I should hold off on doing the major's stuff

Ooooh, thank you! I was able to finish the story now and I made it to the credits! I hadn't returned after turning in all of the parts for the last character, so I didn't get the last quest that would hint on what to do next.

I had no idea there is an Endless mode though! I haven't found that yet outside of the Quick Play!

I don't know if they fixed that or not, I still have no idea what he says there, but it didn't stop me from finishing the game.
