Alice: Madness Returns

How to defeat menacing ruins without umbrella? ALICE MADNESS RETURNS
Does anybody know how, I know you can use the bunny bomb thing but it is really hard and honestly if I can't get through it I will quit the game (or die trying to play) :C

Does anybody know any tips or ways to get the umbrella working again??
I'm only on the first chapter one too!!

The umbrella isn't working when you lock onto the ruins and press "E"?
Same thing happening to me.

On xbox controller you need FOCUS with LT and just press "A" when the enemy attacks!
Try play with Caps Lock pressed

i also had this issue, but the hint for the aiming is a good one: if you go to the aiming mode (capslock), the umbrella works

It's a common problem that has something to do with changing keybinds (any bind, not just the block bind). Go into ../Alice Madness Returns/AliceGame/config/DefaultInput.ini under [Engine.PlayerInput], set the bindings how you like them there, then start the game and revert controls to default. That *should* fix it.

Also make sure the line for the block command in the file reads
+Bindings=(Name="E",Command="TriggerBlock true | OnRelease TriggerBlock false")

You can finish the game without the umbrella, although Menacing Ruins take longer to kill without it (untill you get manlier weapons). Drop a clockwork bomb in front of him then either detonate it and hit him a few times with the vorpal or back up and hit him with the pepper gun. It takes awhile (and the part with 2 Menacing Ruins is...interesting), but he'll start losing his ceramic faces and will go down.

Also, I had to change the line that Foxpass provided in 2 places, first in the Steam Folder, and then in C:\Users\(user name)\Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config

I think it was in the input.ini

Open the .ini with notepad and make the change and save.

This really is an incredible game, and it's unfortunate that the PC port was so badly mangled.
If you don't want to mess with the .ini files, I would suggest upgrading pepper grinder. another thing I'd suggest is using the clockwork bomb. ALL. THE. TIME. It serves as a little explosive powerful enough to make the menacing ruin lose balance for a brief moment. A little help of focus also would be good. I had to use this method back when I had no knowledge of editing those annoying .ini files...

I was having the issue with the umbrella. Resetting to defaults, etc, did not help. What finally resolved it for me was removing the GameConfig_PC.CFG file (within My Documents \ My Games \ Alice Madness Returns \ AliceGame \ CheckPoint \ <profile name> folder for me) and letting it recreate it by launching and configuring the game again. After that, I had no more weird keybind glitches. Maybe worth a shot. I did not notice any loss of progress, etc, as a result, but ymmv.

press caps lock, it works wonders for me when I try to deflect their range attacks.
