Alice: Madness Returns

Original American McGee's Alice
Is this likely to ever come up on Steam (or indeed any other digital download platform on PC)? I have the original game box from circa 2000-2002 and played it on Windows XP/Vista/7. Trouble is on my new PC with Windows 10 (clean install) it does not run or even start. After some digging I learned it's because the boxed game has securom (or safedisc - cannot remember which one) and as such Windows 10 won't allow it to run. So the only chance of ever playing it again is if a digital download version was made available. It is so frustrating that MS have consigned a number of games to the scrapheap because of this. Don't get me wrong I hate securom etc but there are a number of old games (which at the time cost a fair bit of money) that are no longer playable. I think the graphics and feel of the game still stand up very well in today's standards and have great fondness for the game.

It's good that Windows can cope with a lot of software but the demands to progress to a new OS cause frustrating things like this. It's not as if all our old cd's or dvd's refuse to play so why games got targeted like this is a shame.

Sorry it's part question, part venting!

Cheers,
Wayne

And... what about... using a crack?
I know, it's not the solution, you shouldn't be forced to crack it to make it run, etc...
But I can't see this coming on steam anytime soon... so if you just want to play, why not?
I heard it's also possible it might end up on GOG... keep an eye out for that, maybe.

Thanks for the response. I might do. It's just the type of sites that one needs to visit for those things - tend to avoid them like the plague for fear of malware or whatever nasties can get into the pc.

I'll keep an eye on GOG. Thank you for mentioning this. I had never heard of it before (must of been living under a rock). I had a quick peek at the site, the appealing thing is it looks like you don't actually need to download a game client either although correct me if I am wrong. But a great way to find some old classic.

You could try running it in compatibility mode?

They put the feature where you right click on the desktop icon (or .exe) and run trouble shooting, then choose 'it ran in earlier versions of windows' back in. You can choose XP from the list therein.

Although, if windows won't install the program it matters little. It does seem to be selective on that acount. Have games that are the same type of system and bit but only the lucky ones work.

If i'am not mistaken if you buy the PS3/Xbox 360 version of Alice Madness Returns even second hand you can download Alice HD.

As for PC i think the HD re-relase was only a pre order but on some key reseller sites you can buy Alice complete edition witch comes with Alice HD.
