On the flip side Alice is indeed dark and foreboding but in a very bright and colourful way (and yes it is possible to be dark and bright at the same time, this game will convince you of that). The first level alone abuses the entire colour spectrum to it's limit, whilst other levels take on a more grim industrial pallete. The characters you meet all have very strong and overwhelming personalities that aren't necessarily evil but more... sinister, like they're egging Alice onwards just so they can see what happens.
So yeah, Dark Souls is more of a grim and brutal game designed to keep you on the edge of your seat so that you're ready for the next attack and test your reaction times.
Alice is designed to create a sort of confused tension by giving you a bright and colourful world with a twisted undercurrent that will keep you guessing as to what wild and wacky thing is going to happen next.
