Way to ensure quality of items used?

Is there a way (or possible suggestion to add if not) to make sure to use the different quality items (ie, iron, wooden rods, etc..) to make the higher quality tools/weapons? the suggestions say to use all the same quality, but when crafting it combines all qualities to one total, especially if you use the warehouse storage for them.

I was wondering that as well so will watch this space. Been playing around with it a lot and couldn't craft anything of higher quality
