Make sure you check any wreckage that looks like cloth to see if it is salvageable, because you can often get tendon string back from them. There is a lot of things to salvage on the Santa Maria.
If you can make it to Copper Island with what you have, the buffaloes there provide up to 3 tendons each.
Trouble is I have the respawn bug. Buffalos don't respawn, neither do Boars or Jackals. I have been to Copper Island many times and each have needed formatic acid.
Very much this. Although then we might run the risk of making hide armor obsolete if it's easy to get seaweed cloth. But it needs some rebalancing for sure. Right now the only reason to make seaweed cloth is for the catamaran and the perk point (and that really feels bad to make a whole set of useless armor).
Honestly to me the seaweed clothes are a waste of time. I always skip them. It's not hard to just make a nocturnal run and find shade amongst the rocks to nap through the heat on Copper Island to mine your first copper and skip straight to leather.
I've only ever gotten heat stroke once, in my first playthrough. I tried to map in the morning before I even knew heat stroke was a thing in game. Had to sail back to camp to make the formic acid, and that's the only time I've had to use formic acid in any playthrough. Going after the seaweed always comes later for me after I've finished mining all the nodes on Copper Island and I'm starting to run out of things to make.
That would make seaweed armor worth crafting.
