Having to carefully balance daylight, calories burned, water (and other resources) used, and exhaustion is what real-world survival is all about.
I don't mind it in most other things as it seems fairly balanced but I don't see why clothing wears out with time but not use and tools wear out with use and not time.
It does wear out with use, when you are wearing it that is using it. If you take it off it stops losing durability, so you can take off clothing when you don't need the specific protection it provides to make it last longer. You can do the same thing with your backpack when you are not carrying enough weight to need it. Simply by not sleeping in your clothes you can make them last far longer.
I assumed they just ran down there durability, legend cheers, haha. :D
Also it doesn't really need to be "competing" with other games, sometimes it is refreshing to see a survival game that actually does something with simulation of time when doing different stuff instead queueing up things or instant crafting, just like The Long Dark did.
Management of time is the whole essence in this game, you need to consider how and what you spend your time on, however I would love to see a few more things not needing you to be there during the whole process, cooking for example could be like smelters etc. where it gets finished and then if not removed after some time becomes burned :)
Can you explain what you mean by "never work"?
Time is passing therefore it's a chore/work ? Doesn't make much sense.
Gathering sticks on a tree takes time, cutting a tree takes times, picking up all the fruits/flowers in a bush takes time, choosing the right rock for your tools takes time, harvest an animal takes a lot of time.
Any argument about HOW MANY time it takes is absolutly legit though. I personnaly would change a lot of stuff making this game even more realistic. (less time time to pick up a rock but more time to build up a boat, for instance)
But the whole "passing time mechanic" is a good one. And it will never change anyway so it's kind of a waste of time ask for any change on this.
Also it is a matter of opinion, while some would see such mechanics as a chore or work, other may see it as a mix of realism and immersion.
I don't know how far you are into the game, but I can tell you this, when you reach end game you spend very little time on making food, sleeping, sickness etc.
Not only will you become much stronger and more resistent, but you will also have access to things that are several times more powerful than what you have in beginning/mid game, I've seen many games where the grind is much worse than this :)
