1st Impressions

I just got this game and on 1st impression I don't like the early game design choices. So for my 2 items to take with I picked a fishing pole and an axe. Figured a fishing pole would allow me to fish right away. Nope. I can't use the pole unless I have a rod holder. That makes no sense in a survival game. So I have a modern fishing pole but I decide starve to death cause I refuse to just cast a line without a holder.

Then I kill my a rattler snake with an axe. I figured here is a fresh meal. Nope. I cant harvest it without a cutter. What? If I am starving, I use the steel axe head to skin the thing. Idk for sure. But I think all I could even harvest was its rattle. Um, rattle snakes are delicous. Just cut the head and steer clear of its fangs.

At this point I would have refunded the game with reason - Not as expected. Except I cant cause I bought a steam key for it for $10. Not a big loss and its the 1st game I bought with a key that I didn't like.

The game should be coded so that anything with a sharp edge counts as a cutter. The devs believe that a chipped stone palm cutter would be more effiecient than an axe head? Wow. I was in the army. The whole improvise, adapt, and overcome mentality. We wouldn't use what we had. Devs have never been camping even.

You can fish with rod without a holder. You can also fish from shore without a raft. Your odds probably are not even reduce. I mean your fishing in unfished waters where the fish would be ultra stupid and not leery of a hook. The fish would catch from shore woukld most likely be smaller, but if your starving who cares. During WW2. Seaman lost at sea in a raft, killed a small shark circling thier raft with a knife and ate it raw. They survived for IIRC over 30 days at sea because of this. Imagine if they just gave up cause they didn't have a pole with a rod holder.

I know its just a game, but its a survival game, so a player needs to be rewarded for finding new ways to use items that they were not intended for. Everyone even does this at home. We jerryrig stuff. This game punishes you for being creative. That also makes it boring because its then nothing more than a series of fetch quests. Fetch these 2 items to make this, and those 3 items to make that. I could eat turtle soup with just having an axe. I imagine in this game I would need 4 different items at least.

I figured an axe would be good for rattle snakes, turtles, and anything that walks or crawls basically. An axe could be used for dozens of things in this game. I am also guessing that my steel axe will wear out faster than if I built a stone axe by hand. If they were not serious about how to use stuff to survive they should have made the graphics cartoonish instead of realistic to better match the play style.

They better add a workshop section and make the game moddable.

There are only certain spots you can fish at . I am on my second play-thru and have never needed a ' Holder ' to fish . The fishing spots are a bunch of rocks with a big white fish on it . I myself have never started with the fishing pole so maybe I have missed something . Are you fishing from land or you raft/boat ? I go for crabs , and coconuts for the starting period using a wooden spear .

I was from land. idk, but maybe with the modern fishing rod you might be able to fish from any spot as long as you make a rod holder. Guessing the rod holder gets made out of bamboo. I'll stick with it. That was just my initial rant. I have to give it at least 5 hours to be fair.

uPDATE: Thanks for the spear tip. I got a crab on the 1st throw. Never realized I was that good with a spear.

I still don't know what you mean by ' Rod Holder ' ?You don't need one to make either rod . I can't find a rod holder in the crafting menu at all . Are you fishing from a designated fishing spot ? The ones with the white fish painted on it ? I don't think there is even a fishing spot on the starter Island .

Ah , I looked at a fishing spot . Each designated fishing spot HAS a Rod Holder at it , which you click on to start fishing . You cant walk up to the waters edge and just start fishing anywhere .

seriously, you were going to get a refund because YOU made the wrong choices and YOU dont know how to play a survival game. lmao. You got upset because you couldnt eat a snake when there are coconut palms and fruit in plentiful, not to mention, the crabs on the beach at the VERY beginning you could have stocked up your entire storage with food. To skin the snake you simply need to pick up a stone and craft a cutter, stones are everywhere but you couldnt figure any of this out and slag off the game.

Obviously he did figure it out, he literally said it in the post. And he's arguing philosophy behind tools usage. What a gaslighting dumb take.
