I think I found random pyrite on the ground/rocks on Red and Copper islands. As others have said its not really a huge deal to upgrade to pyrite from flint. You should probably be running an oil lamp back at your home base 24/7 for lighting your machines anyway.

Actually why do you need more pyrite? With 3 pieces your pyrite firestarters won't be exhausted by the time you get to iron flint firestarters?

With how much coal there is in comparison to ore just make the Coal fire starter. By the time I found pyrite I already had access to the coal fire starter and the coal nodes are still half full halfway into iron island while the iron nodes I've found are already depleted
