Also, check your crafting recipes - especially machines - if there are upgrades shown in there. I found quite often that you needed to craft something else first, before you were even able to craft the machine required to use that item.
And for iron that thing may be a 2nd type of mold.

Take a minute to read all the on-screen prompts and press the correct key (probably spacebar).
It is always possible you have a genuine bug but if you do it's most likely that it's your game and hopefully a file verify would fix it. It's also possible that a corrupt save might give you errors.
With that said I would say the above comment has a great deal of merit. If it was a legitimate bug I do feel that it would be a very common topic here. It's not, so I would verify your files and restart the game and if that fails then the above comment is your most likely answer.
I don't think there are too many people who if they were honest would not admit to missing something obvious and jumping to the wrong conclusion. I have done it. I know I have. So yeah just look very carefully at what you are doing and if you have to then I am sure Youtube would have a clip showing someone crafting iron ingots and maybe you could follow that to double check.
Do you have fuel? Is it lit? Got enough ore in it?
