About resources...
So when I harvest a tree there is no visual indication that I harvested the tree? I just started a game and I can't tell which tree I've harvested unless I walk up to it and it says something about resources depleted.

Am I really going to have to go up to each tree and do this throughout the game?

I'm in the tutorial area btw, and this just really makes no sense to me and if it's like this throughout the game, I ain't got time for that.

Trees that give branches are like that, yeah. And stone piles. Most stuff isn't.

You can get resources from the new area and meanwhile old will replenish, I think it is a main gameplay loop.

You're in the starting area? ok then good luck with whatever you end up playing.

Like most survival games there's progression that makes this a non-issue if you keep playing.

So there comes a point where you don't have to farm trees at all?

some resources do have physical changes to them. Others won't. You can check how long it takes for a certain resource to respawn when you harvest them and since it may take 20+ days per item you can safely just not come back to that area for a good portion of time expecting there to be little/no resources. Usually there are plenty of other areas to grab that resource from elsewhere.

As you level up you will walk/swim way way faster, carry more, have a cart (or a better cart) and boat. By the end of the game you zoom around with over 200 weight (if using the cart) on very hard.
All of this help carrying stuff around. Basically, by the time you finish the first island basic survival is a non-issue and because of this you can gather stuff in large batch. So you just can just gather a large area, eventually do a few trip with a cart, then ignore the area for as long as it's required for the resources to respawn (usually, quite a long time).

By the time you round up everything you could need around the first island, there is still other island to gather from, or you could simply skip time (bed + rain collector + dried food/ easy to gather crops or wild plants). it's quite fast to skip days and days.

Or you could spend some time leveling up some skills (like repairing, build a boat, control it, ram it once, repair it with the basic repair kit and repeat).

The idea is, there is plenty of stuff around and stuff you could do, there is no reason you would want to keep checking again and again the same trees.

Especially if you don't play on very hard, since survival isn't a big deal even early game.

Small tip that may help you : it's faster to either move the log bench around or build more of them near trees (may require a roof to avoid trouble) and use a storage cart instead of a log cart, or not using a cart at all (considering you might want to run back home to sleep and whatever before you can fill your inventory anyway).
It's also faster to cut down tree to make them regrow stuff. That mean you will visually know once it's back.

The two replies ^above have a lot of good info - also you'll find other sources of sticks (check the bushes with thorns) that will provide more than enough sticks without having to worry about reusing trees as sources.

As Cougarific said, the bushes with thorns that are blocking most narrow passages are the best source of sticks. You can usually collect around 100 or more and they are fairly light so you can carry that many back to your base. This game uses a lot of sticks. At one point I had 2 piles with at least 200 in each and now they are all gone. Also, harvesting sticks off these bushes doesn't use a tool.

Stick bush are also very very easy to farm, if you collect them as soon as one branch grow up you can gather plenty of seed faster than any other plant (considering you find plenty of wild seed for them).

By the end of the game I had a handful of farm with those bush only, this way I don't need to walk around gather branch for fuel (required for smelting, and smoking mostly).
