Portable bed is close to useless
A good idea, but in the end, it is so "picky" in how flat the ground must be that it's just a chore to find a valid spot. It should have the same stat, except for the stamina 6 recovery, as the primitive bed. No need to require super flat ground. You already "pay" the cost with a weight of 2 kilograms. If that's not enough, then have it degrades each time you sleep.

Just wait for leather portable bed, very useful for stamina even health

If you can't deploy it, then it won't help. IDK if the leather portable bed is less of a pain to deploy, but the leaf one ... Oh my. The smallest declivity and it can't.

I find them both to be very useful. The only places I usually have no luck are very steep hills. The game seems to care more about bulges in the middle of the bed than gaps between the head and the foot. I just spent the night on a boulder in the jungle with only the head and foot touching anything. If all else fails, most places in the game are a short run to a beach, and it's very easy to find a spot there.

I came to post those exact same feedbacks.

+1 then

Never tried the portable leaf bed but the sleeping bag is both lighter and better than the (non-portable) bed of leaves. I have no issues finding valid locations to place it.

The sleeping bag does not give me much grief at all. Usually do not bother with the tier 1 portable bed as i am busy working into basic hide tech.
Ras Jul 12, 2023 @ 7:35am
how do you use the sleeping bag? I put it on the ground, but when I press T it still says I'm "sleeping on the ground" with the same bonuses as if I didn't have the bag. There is also no "R" or "Q" when you highlight the bag, only "E" to pick it up.

I am surly missing something here...

UPDATE:

Ok, I'm an idiot, you have to "place" the bag from inventory, not "drop" it on the ground.

Somebody's never been camping.

Set up your tent / sleeping bag on a slightly uneven or sloped area and tell me how well you sleep.

IRL portable hammocks avoid this problem entirely (and are much safer in terms of snakes & insects).

It's a game, silly. The portable bed is judged within the self-contained world of FOY, not against reality. I was sleeping in a sleeping bag 35 years ago while doing my military, so refrain from patronizing me, thanks.

and ^that's why there are so few realistic survival simulators on the market.

"Doesn't matter if it's realistic or not, just make the game easier please." :steamfacepalm:

When you used a sleeping bag 35 years ago did you set it up on the side of a hill? Or did you find a nice flat spot for sleeping?

That's not the point here. Indeed you'll want your sleeping bag to be set on a flat area IRL. What you need to check here is the item cost versus its practicality. If by design it can't be used anywhere except on the beach and a few spots tedious to find, then it's a useless item. A game is a very simplified and abstracted version of reality, compare the item versus other similar things within the game perspective.
Another way of looking at how balanced an item is in a game is how much players use the item. If it is not much used, then chances are there is an issue with it.

Expect you are the only one with this issue.. stop trying to put your bag on a 90 degree hill and put on flat ground like you should and you wouldn't have a problem.

You want flat ground everywhere...just have a building kit, a stone and a hammer in your back pack all the time... Place a foundation and presto you have a bit of flat area to place a bed.

There are a ton of places you can't place it but you should be able too.

Just make Coffee or a Berry Compote and forget about sleeping when on a resource gathering mission.
