Stuck on terminal

My game has been having an issue where I'll open the terminal and just be stuck there for an undetermined amount of time. esc doesn't work when trying to leave. the fixes I've seen for others was to adjust a mod they have, but I don't have any mods installed.. How on earth do I fix this. It doesn't seem to be an issue with my laptop
