Is Spray Paint Persistent?

My buddy and I were playing last night, and we went to Vow and did a bit of spraying with some purple paint to mark exits. He didn't spray anything, I was the only one with a can any time we were going into Bunkers and the like.
We went to March for a little while, before coming back to Vow due to weather. I'd since switched to yellow paint, and brought it with me for Vow.
After clearing a few rooms, I found my purple paint I sprayed earlier, on the wall. It was a large arrow indicating where the Exit was. Entities prevented further exploration, but it freaked us out because I was the first one there and neither of us were using the purple anymore.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I think it resets every time you reboot a match. Had a friend spray paint the whole ship, but it all disappeared when we restarted to get another guy in.

all i know is that it remains on the same moon within the 3 day deadline, did not get a chance to test if it carries over when a new deadline starts
my guess is restarting the lobby or losing the game resets the paint
