How do you close steam leaks?

I've found piping with a valve on it before, but it said at the time that I was unable to interact with it. Is that how you close the leaks? Is it something else? Any advice would be welcome.

yes you walk into the steam and turn a valve to stop it

you need to walk into the steam, and listen for the noise.
the steam leak noise gets louder the closer you are to the valve that you need to turn.

There usually is a strong stream of steam which is visible even in the area where the steam is quite dense. Just follow the sound and the stream and you will find the valves which turn the steam off.

do keep in mind sometimes the steam is coming from a floor below or above
