Yes!
I didn't even feel like i was NOT part of a friend group 70% of the time because the banter between crewmates was so good.
I'd say just give it a shot, join some lobbies and see if you find people you vibe with.
If you don't, you can always just host your own server and maybe even suggest your playstyle in the title.
I named my server "Let's steal some alien ♥♥♥♥" and i got 3 random but fun lighthearted teammates who had a nice balance of reaching our goals and having a laugh.
Long story short my experience with randoms was great.
You need a group to go far, though far doesn't really mean that much.
