LAN game is permanently broken!

Has anyone ever successfully managed to make this game actually work over a local area network with two laptops connected to the same network? I have been trying this for the past few days and all I seem to get is an error, what's most infuriating is the fact that there is absolutely no information about this that I can find on the internet.

Are you able to connect to LAN with other games? How are you connected to the same network, a router (wireless or wired) or a switch? or are you using a direct cable from one laptop to the other (you need to have a modified cat5/6 cable which is really just the pins switched on one end, known as a crossover cable)

I haven't tried LAN to LAN aka two machines, but I can join myself just fine via LAN (multi instances, same PC)

Networking is a pain to get right
