Issues With Bees

Does anyone know what triggers them to leave the hive and just roam around?

I can get bee hives on the ship pretty consistently, but sometimes they just decide they're going to leave the hive and roam around. Is it caused by placing the too closely to the rails?

I don't want to accidentally wipe my team because of something easily preventable.

I feel that they currently might be bugged; normally bees should go rogue and roam outside killing anyone they stumble across when they cannot find/path to their hive anymore.

From personal experience, it feels like, on occasion, if you grab the hive and run away with it too quickly, then they can lose track of it; so I'd try to, after the initial sprint, slowing down enough for them to still be on your tail until you drop that hive.

Bees are bugged and have a couple of known issues already, the one you're talking about is the issue with them being permanently hostile unless you lure them back to the hive to force them back to passivity.
