Arachnophobia mode is fine, you guys are just mean.

I do not have an irrational fear of spiders-- in fact I find the model used in game to be very cute-- but I know many people who do, and because of the giant spider enemy their enjoyment of the game was severely hindered. I don't think people understand that the fear you feel with a phobia is not akin to the fear you feel when simply playing a horror game. It's a different beast entirely.

Using my own phobia as an example, I'm severely emetophobic. So ofc when two of my friends warned me about the new item and its killing animation, I tried seeing if anyone had made a mod that simply removed particle effects, or any potential sounds. I could only find these stupid ass forum posts making fun of people for needing phobia toggles. I've since come to the conclusion that I should be able to learn to tolerate the new enemy, because it's just off enough from my usual panic triggers to not set me off, but for a good day or so I was genuinely concerned I wouldn't be able to play the game, or that I'd ruin the experience for my teammates. Like, to bring another horror game as an example, I love Resident Evil 8, I just can't play Moreau's section because of the gratuitous vomit, I have to hand the controller off to a friend and leave the vicinity of the TV lest I want to have a panic attack.

The fear isn't a simple adrenaline rush, its an activation of the fight or flight response. It's exhausting, not fun, and I'm glad that the toggle exists as an *option* for people with arachnophobia, which is to my knowledge one of the most common phobias in the world.

*Some* of you act like you're being legally required to turn this toggle on. You're not. You can still play with the spider. No one's breaking into your house and holding you on gun point to turn the toggle on. It's optional, it's to the side of the settings menu, you never have to touch it if you don't want to. If you don't have arachnophobia, or some other uncomfortable squick with spiders, then it's not for you. End of story. The world does not revolve around you or your experiences. The weird ass jokes making fun of people who need the optional toggle aren't funny, I think a lot of you just missed the chance to be bullies in middle school so you're trying to do it now.

Also I keep seeing the "i have nyctophobia can we have a nyctophobia mode???" point of mockery??? Yeah that already exists it's called turning your brightness up. That's already in the game. This means nothing.

At the end of the day we're all trying to have fun here, and some of us want to play a horror game in ways that don't actually make us want to throw up or have a panic attack, feels a little weird to be getting this up in arms about an optional, out of the way, accessibility feature, and acting like its mere existence is somehow a harbinger.

Ever since the addition of the clown award, there is a monetary incentive to post bait because you gain steam points whenever you get an award, the very first comment in the v45 update news got 3600 clown awards and gained 720k steam points from it, dude can probbably buy every single profile picture, background, border, emote, showcase, whatever with all the points he got.

@pipedreams just a reminder to destroy/remove all the things they fear/dislike from existence, is that not the correct action to do in this day and age? Next thing needed is an Anthropophobia mode and a Anemophobia mode. I'm sure there's a few spiders out there that find this offensive .
