Environmental Avoidance
So I have an alternative suggestion to rails, what if we just had like hidey-hole mechanics where we couldn't use items like shovels and such. These could be things like lockers, or tables with cloths on them we could hide under via crouching, or other such things to avoid enemies.

Right now it seems like its pretty META to bring in a shovel to deal with most threats in a facility. Having a way to fight and kill an enemy and being forced to kill a threat in a horror game generally devalues the horror it can represent. A game is scarier the less ways you have to directly fight the horror after all and when the Meta seems to be "Just kill it." it takes some of that away. People bring up the Thumper a lot and how the only two options really seem to be now that the rail cheese is gone is either leave the planet or beat it to death with a shovel.

I'd like a third avoidance option, where you can use different environmental objects in a facility to sneak around said facility and avoid the monsters, barring line of sight. You could even couple this with things like throwable pebbles and stuff to work as distractions for monsters. So you could throw a pebble down a hall, hide in a locker or under a table, watch the monster go by to investigate the sound and then sneak past it.

Having a stealthy approach to dealing with monsters can greatly increase the play-ability of the game and increase the fear factor. The extra approach to dealing with some monsters like the Thumper would I think be a satisfying way to cope with the loss of one of the most common, casual player strats in dealing with them because it offers another avenue of survival than to just murder it with a shovel or give up on the planet.

Personally, I still try with a Thumper present even if I don't have a shovel, buuuut... I do really want a sneaky way of playing where I can stealth around monsters and play a real horror game where I get to hold my breath as the monster goes by my hiding spot.

That's a good idea, but the monsters' mechanics would have to be reworked completely. To me, some monsters should just be fought like thumpers, but their 'detection' should be nerfed - they should be deaf as the dogs.

I honestly think that it would be better to have monster 'costumes' or something of the sort that lowers detectability. Like a new feature where your detectability is at 100% and then decreases based on how much you carry, and whether you have a costume on or not. Each player could have a different costume to 'work' with a different monster so that there is a way of going past each one of them, but not at once by one player.

EDIT: I meant starts at 50% and either increases or decreases.

I think the main issue with thumpers is not their detection but their unpredictable acceleration. Sometimes thumper will slow down on every single bump, sometimes thumper will just zoom around the whole factory on a 1 second interval. Killing thumpers would be much more reliable if they were more consistent with the acceleration

I just wish there was more options to combat enemies except shovel/sing and rails before fix. You die too quickly in this game sometimes and while it's fun for a first 10 hours it quickly gets frustrating and annoying to deal with quick time to die if you make a mistake.
