if you're concerned about people caring, don't worry I think they would appreciate you trying to communicate via text
You can certainly play this game without a mic, it'll definitely be a bit more challenging to type to teammates fast enough to respond to dire situations though. I'd recommend hosting your own lobbies to avoid being kicked by folks looking for mics though.
It's awkward talking to strangers but it's not impossible for people with social anxiety or other issues. Get help as someone suggested or try to slowly ease yourself in. People will get mad if you get overwhelmed and leave or stop talking but it's always okay to leave and stabilise yourself mentally. Cheers, get better buddy.
The question that was being asked is if it's necessary - no, but it should be noted a big factor of enjoyment comes from proximity chat. Communication is a bit more difficult over text(it's also proximity based, so not cheating at all) but isn't outright impossible. There are many people who even enjoy singleplayer. Don't let aggressive internet trolls decide whether or not you should try this game; this game is still plenty enjoyable without your mic and is by no means vital towards having fun.
