It's definitely still playable solo but I wouldn't say it's balanced for it.
No lower monster spawns I think... The only balance change is the face-hugging monster will abandon you in a critical condition instead of outright murdering you.
I'll also add that if you find a lobby that accepts mic-less people, they've always been super accommodating of any whacky shenanigans I like to do (for those times I don't feel like VC). Running off solo/buying some things etc. A lot of people will immediately leave, so if you're willing to stay I think most people would ignore/accept anything else you might be concerned about.

It's a very high skill cap to play this game successfully on solo. But, like why? The gameplay itself is mildly fun with a somewhat interesting loop. The horror is meh after a while. But the entire point of this game is the coop it has. That's why it, and games like it are able to universally explode.
