However, if you have above quota and sell it all despite not actively needing money to get something specifically, you might wish you hadn't later if you have a bad run.
At least, I'm pretty sure this is how it works...but the game doesn't discriminate between stuff you already have on board, and new stuff you brought on board from wherever you just landed as far as the daily quota counter is concerned.
I haven't played in a little while so maybe that's changed - I'm unaware of it if it has. But it's a "pro strat" basically to not sell everything if you don't have to since it makes it easier to make quota in case of a bad run later.
Though keep in mind; if you all die or the ship leaves without you all you lose any scrap you have on board as well so don't treat it like an insurance policy if you all die - just if the run wasn't very good/profitable/♥♥♥♥ was too dangerous.
Only exception being if you want to specifically get certain items early on, or if you want to go to Tier 3 moons as soon as possible, yeah then you have to sell way above the initial quota, but it'll pay back big time.
Thats not strictly speaking how it generates, but its a great visual aid to understand why it seems randomly chosen.
