There are mods which add more progression. For example - mods that add more items, more ship upgrades, and so on. I personally use a mod that adds a bunch of different suit colors to the game you can purchase from the store, which is nice. There's a big mod which adds late-game upgrades which are very expensive to buy all of, but unfortunately they are massively overpowered and so I wouldn't recommend that mod for balanced game-play unless you are playing with mods that also make the game more difficult (like Brutal Company).
This game is more about the minute to minute experience than trying to progress, anyway. There's a mod somewhere I saw that adds some minor RPG elements, but such things are very limited at this point. We might see more at some point, but for now this game isn't really conducive to playing really long-term - even with mods, within a few hours of playtime you can see basically everything there is to see. But it still can remain fun even when you restart.
Wow, that was really detailed and exactly the answer I was looking for. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply so thoughtfully :)
Edit: And your player "rank", which I forgot about, since it resets for seemingly no reason at times.
