Player controlled monster won't have rules. You could abuse like camping the main entrance or ship. And make the game unfun for the 4 players.
Uh.. No.
I can kinda understand what you're trying to say, but most enemies don't exactly follow rules voluntarily, but are instead hard-coded to not do certain things, and the main entrance abusing statement is irrelevant since the AI literally do that, I feel like the entrance is as dangerous if not more dangerous than EVERYWHERE else in the map, since that's where all the players lead the enemies to.
IE, if a player could be a thumper, the only rule is that they'd be deaf, so, if somebody was selected to be a thumper, they could have no audio related to sound ques and all the thumper abilities, problem solved.
Spider? disable their ability to leave a certain area outside their nest or go close to people, then remove the rule as soon as a player approaches them or hits a web.
Hydrogeres? force the movement speed to be increased when near music or attacked.
Bracken? If you're spotted briefly remove the ability to move closer to people, but then re-enable it after a timer or continued observation.
Eyeless dog? that would be tough, but potentially show them a rough concept of the world and make the terrain appear as you walk up to it, if something makes noise, have it appear as long as it makes sound so the dog player can rush it.
Baboon Hawk? allow free reign to do anything except attack things, once a player attacks you or you have a group of allies, you gain the ability to attack.
Forest Giant? Literally no rules, they don't have rules regardless, they do what they want, and what is it they want? To camp the ship and make the game difficult, and they already have thermal sniper scope quality eyesight and supersonic hearing, so it doesn't matter if they are player controlled, they'll be just as annoying, if not less annoying.
All enemies have fundamental rules to counter them, so all that is needed is programming to align the player with said rules but still have the unpredictability that a real human would have.
I do fully see all the problems that could come with implementing a game mode like this, but I personally think it would be a really fun and goofy time to try and scare your friends, the game mode wouldn't be forced on anyone, it would simply be an option to allow people to have fun in a way they want, and that's what matters most, people having fun doing what they want, and some people want to be a shadow monster that snaps people's necks and drags them away. :3
I can't imagine those same kids doing PvP if they can't handle people using the railings in their own games to out smart the ai, my god the poor forums.
But it also would take a massive amount of work to balance and make enjoyable, and ultimately the vast majority of people wouldn't want to engage with it. It also would break immersion more than anything else, and considering there's supposed to be some horror to this game (even if also a lot of comedy) - that's not ideal.
So I don't think this is a good idea, at least not until the game is massively more complete in terms of content.
As far as this topic goes.
Absolutely not. Stop ruining fantastic concept with pvp. As soon as PVP gets added, coop will sacricifice content/quality.
And L4D is made by how many people?
Oh cool, that sounds great for me and my friends! Can you please tell me some of those games? I'd like a nice list since there are plenty of them according to you. I'll be waiting.
A few things that are important are a large active player count, a variety of monsters to play as, and an interesting play-style and experience as each one, and just saying "Dead by Daylight" won't cut it, good luck <3
If someone is a coil head and is being looked at, they can't move, for example.
People are always so against even the utterance of pvp modes in games like this, when in reality they could be added after the full game is released, and probably be fun to play with friendos.
Yeah, I feel DBD is the only game that checks the boxes but that game is just so nasty, the people, the devs, everything, the game isn't even scary, it's a horror game that doesn't have horror.
Lethal Company would be great for a casual PvP horror experience, it wouldn't be inherently competitive, you wouldn't need to spend a bunch of money to play the hip new monster, and it would just be a fun option to have, you wouldn't need to force it, only allow it as an option.
Just imagine the clips you could pull of as the flowerman, lurking in the shadows watching your friends, prodding them occasionally and scaring the ♥♥♥♥ out of them, and then the eventual execution where you slaughter them. Think of the laughs you could get looking over the clips, all the fun it would bring! I can just see it clear as day, showing your friends that you've been stalking them for minutes without them even having a clue.
And the lootbugs, that'd be hilarious, following your friend until they drop something and then yoinking it, imagine how funny it'd be to steal your friends shovel when they get snare flea'd, it'd be such a riot.
And I must repeat, it would be optional, you wouldn't be afraid of getting raided by a hacker when playing with friends, you might be able to have the option to get raided by a random person, but require a special selection in the lobby screen to allow.
But for all the people that can't sleep at night with the thought of PvP being in their beloved Lethal Company, you won't need to interact with it, so all you are doing is trying to gate-keep the game from appealing to a larger audience that is more interested in PvP.
I believe I have said enough, feel free to let me know if you find this idea that wouldn't affect you to be really dumb because you like the game to be interesting to you and your friends only. <3
