Sandworms are unpredictable
I know that you run when you hear them, and it's important to preserve stamina in case one appears, but I've had times where they will make less than a seconds worth of noise to alert me, then rumble and kill me instantly. When there's no time to react, that doesn't seem fair. I'm talking from silence > death there's about a seconds worth of sound, whereas other times they make their presence known 5-10 seconds before they get you. In that case, like every other monster they work perfectly fine.

myeah should have at least a ''drop everything you carry'' button so when you feel it's underneath you - you press the button and then just run. right now if you've got 4 heavy items on you, you most of the times just will not have enough time to drop all 4 using the scrollwheel, and run to the side to escape it. (you need to drop items to carry less weight which = less stamina drain when running + running quicker)

They do have a sound cue that most people think is ambient noise. Its close to the sound of rushing wind thats all

nahhhh adds to the panic when you can't scroll to that one item and you keep going past it lol

What I did was as soon as I heard one I dropped stuff as fast as I could so I would be lighter when running away so it would just miss me. Thankfully they don't eat your loot.

the growling sound just means it's following you without any indicator of how close or far. there's a distinct sound effect and visual effect (dirt spikes) for when it's about to strike; it targets the space ahead of wherever you're going so that you walk into it. To counter this, simply reverse direction when those dirt spikes appear and move in the opposite direction.
From my time with it, it seemed to stop sensing me when I was standing on rocks, though I may have just gotten lucky. Sort of treating it like the Graboids from Tremors or the Antlions from Halflife 2
