Meaning that you as a player can 100% avoid spiders.
And yes I can read, I read through your whole argument and responded.
I respect your point, I just disagree with it.
It does not make sense for me that in a game about horror, some horror should be off-limits.
Besides that, spiders can spawn from vents while you are in the building, that can happen at any point between entering the facility and leaving the moon. It can spawn directly in front of someone, behind them, round a corner, in a previously explored area etc and once it spawns it will nest somewhere else and could even nest right by the front door.
At this point, it is not avoidable at all and even less predictable. They are also more aggressive if they spawn from a vent since they don't hang onto walls and will spot players from far away and chase them.
As I said, no predictability and only avoidable in specific circumstances whereas all the other things are entirely predictable and entirely avoidable.
Because it's a commonly requested and added accessibility feature in videogames.
Simple as.
1 - / Don't go inside the facility and stay in the ship to guide others / open doors/ shut down turrets / secure the evac.
2 - / Don't go near spiders nor webs.
3 - / As anything can spawn from vent, don't stay near them when you hear rumblings inside.
So no, catering to arachnophobia is no different than catering to cinophobia or apiphobia for exemple. just don't go near them if you are too scared.
And they also make a very distinct sound.
So before they come into viewing distance, you can avoid them just fine.
Someone who has a phobia of say, a spider, who knows that spiders are in the game, probably feels existential dread the entire time they are in the building. And because for them it is a phobia, it is a very real fear and as I said it is extreme and irrational, they can't just say "this is fine, it's a game." Some people can deal with it and some people can separate the phobia from a video game but a lot of people can't and for them it is very literally debilitating.
Having a creepy atmosphere can have great effects, but feeling total dread for something is never pleasant - and no video game should be unpleasant. That is why predictability is so important, there is no way to predict specifically what types of monsters will spawn inside the facility, which means no way to avoid them, which means no way to avoid that dread/anxiety/whatever specific feeling it is.
There is no reason in any world that an option to change the model of spiders for that specific phobia can't or shouldn't be added, it would have no effect on any player not using that option so it takes nothing away from the game while making the game playable for the people that need it.
And like I already said, that specific phobia should have that because it is the only thing that is not predictable while also not needing a drastic change to the game and not taking away from the overall atmosphere of the game.
It shouldn't be particularly difficult to understand.
Are the devs in the wrong for not adding them?
And no this is not false equivalence.
In darksouls a major focus is on difficulty. So it would detract from the intended vision of the game to add a difficulty slider.
In Lethal Company a major focus is on horror, the spider is a major threat, therefore it would detract from the vision of the game to just remove it or remodel it fur such an option.
In both cases I am talking about the devs vision of the game, since ultimately creating games is not just about money. It's about creating art.
If a dev would only be after money, they would of course have no reason to not add any popular request.
The same applies to my earlier example, if they added an "easy-mode" to dark souls, more people would probably buy the games and thus give the devs and publishers more money.
YET, they did not add such an option, not even in elden ring, why?
The answer is: They want their art to be respected the way it is.
Spiders are such a low focus point of this game, for people who aren't arachnophobic spiders are one of the least threatening/formidable monsters to deal with and the simple fact they are spiders contributes nothing to the game. That means it changes literally nothing about the game to have an option that changes them to look less like spiders.
But besides that, the darkness and low visibility is an essential part of the atmosphere in this game. If it was never dark you wouldn't need flashlights or pro flashlights, there would no point having the apparatus or breaker boxes and the game would be significantly easier.
It is not reasonable to change the game in such a drastic way for the people that struggle with that, but changing a single model to something slightly different requires absolutely no effort and makes no difference to the average player or the game itself.
It's not complicated.
Then do it. If you can do that part of the job for the devs, I am fine with that.
I am way more interested by seeing the dev work on some actual new content rather than wasting time and efforts on replacing all spiders models by cats JPEG.
