My idea to make them more fair and engaging was to make their vision act like a spotlight, where the area they are looking is lit up to at least let the players know if its safe to leave cover or not. This would make them more visually intimidating, and would also let the player have some counterplay measure besides dumb luck or booking it to the ship.
Every time one of them has spawned on me I'm dead before I even knew it was there.
Giant right now is just a bad camper with near wall-hack vision.
Honestly that'd be really neat, have their lore be something like "bioluminescent bacteria and the forest keeper act in a symbiotic relationship. The bacteria guiding the forest keeper to its prey, focusing its attention. And in return, they enjoy the leftovers"
It sounds like they should eat anything that interests them, but I haven't had luck with that, and it's not clear what that would be that isn't the player. Maybe the toy robot or something noisy would work? The only option would then be the zap-gun I think, but I've never tried it, and just choose to stick to desert planets (though the late tier planets don't have that option). Also if the zap gun is expected (which I doubt it is), then that's one hell of a requirement for all of the enemies that require nothing else to avoid.
Other then that, they have huge view distance, hiding behind trees isn't super reliable, they can see through fog/blizzards even though they are sight based, and they can't be outrun. Teleportation is the only way to cancel a friendly death safely (and requires at least 3-4 players to reliably have someone at the ship).
Compare that to the dogs: they can only hear, can be tricked (boombox, item drop, etc.) and dodged like any classic resident evil enemy (drop your stuff, run perpendicular, they miss every single time). Similarly, the worms are slow, and though they can't be seen, can be outrun; someone on monitor is a guarantee for survival instead of a teleport save only.
The baboon hawks also have good management methods with grouping.
It's crazy how dangerous the forest giants are versus anything else that is outside exclusive.
Also, the dogs are incredibly more easy to deal with. All you have to do is not make a sound. That’s it. Just be quiet. They won’t enter the ship unless you make a noise they will just walk around it. All you have to do is walk. You don’t even have to crouch. Just walk right by them and keep an eye as to not run into them. It’s far more engaging and actually puts an element into the game to be quiet and stop communication to deal with them. Whereas the giants are just a giant walking F U with no skill or additional mechanics to the game unlike the rest of the enemies.
