... someone doesn't know what a phobia is

There is a difference, I don't have correct words for it. Someone might educate you on the topic if you are willing to understand.

A phobia is an overwhelming and debilitating fear of an object, place, situation, feeling or animal.

Phobias are more pronounced than fears. They develop when a person has an exaggerated or unrealistic sense of danger about a situation or object.

If a phobia becomes very severe, a person may organise their life around avoiding the thing that's causing them anxiety. As well as restricting their day-to-day life, it can also cause a lot of distress.

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. You may not experience any symptoms until you come into contact with the source of your phobia.

if you get more scared because of a thing that has a few more legs than a human, then it sounds like a fitting fear for a horror game.

it's a way to torture yourself not a way to have fun, just have that in mind. Good if that helps with getting rid of a phobia, but still not having fun facing your fears.

As someone who has pretty extreme apiphobia, I can confirm videogames definitely helped me, so I can vouch for that.
Doesn't change though that it didn't really happen overnight.

I do think anyone with a phobia should try to fight it. Why should you let something so stupid have control over you?

That's not really the argument that was presented here.
It can be debilitating and I can see why people would want alternatives.
(Especially because this game is very much about having a laugh with your friends).

But if anyone has such a phobia and is reading this, I do recommend to engage with it.
It IS a videogame. You are safe.

People like you are the reason I opened a post about this topic without reacting to the nonsense comments. Being that obsessed with other peoples phobia out of pure malice is almost something I would call a mental illness. Maybe focus on yourself and stop being a douche in forums.

The fact alone that people scrolling through the forums and commenting on topics that don't even affect them is sad enough on it's own and that's part of the reason I wont give them any attention - Symkyr

As an arachnophobic person: spiders affect me. As someone being the reason for you to open this post: it affects me. Thank you for trying. :D

Spiders scare me when I'm around them in real life. If I see them on a computer screen it doesn't affect me. Let's be real, if a game dev had to design their game around every phobia or everything that could offend someone there'd be no game to play lol.

Arachnophobia is the most common phobia and a lot of games have it as an option as well. Ofcourse you can't cover all phobias without losing the essence of the game. But removing or censoring spiders will not kill the horror aspect of the game. There are a lot of games that are scary without having a single spider in them. I can also play without the arachnophobia mod but it's very disgusting for me to look at and kinda kills the fun of horror for me. I find the Flower Man to be the scariest monster in the game and yet it's the spider that doesn't really do much that bothers me the most.

Where do you draw the line? At Arachnophobia? I've seen this before. It starts with Arachnophobia and next thing you know we're at fear of women, fear of water, fear of birds. I believe it's individual responsibility to avoid games that have things that are too unpleasant for them to be able to ignore otherwise you begin flying through the vast expanses of the panderverse with no destination.

Avoiding a game because of one single aspect that can be fixed with a setting or a mod is a bit harsh don't you think? The spider is like maybe 1% of the content of the game. Also yeah, drawing the line at the most common phobia people have would make it accessable for a big chunk of people so that would indeed be appropriate in my opinion.

Not everyone that has a fear of spiders has the same fear when they see a spider in a video game or movie opposed to in real life though. Sure the dev can make a fast toggle that disables the spawn of the spider and replaces it with something else and it probably won't take long, but realistically how many of the 100k+ copies of this game sold have players where a spider in the game is a deal breaker?
DoctorEva Nov 23, 2023 @ 4:04am
Who cares? Who here is arguing that having spiders is a deal breaker? Who here is arguing that devs need to account for phobias?

People are afraid and made a mod to get around it.
Then *some people* made a thread mocking those people.

Seems easy for me to tell who's stirring up ♥♥♥♥ here.
