maybe there was a war or something and that's why the facilities are abandoned, they couldn't keep hold of them and fight off monsters/people/whatever at the same time, so the facilities lost funding and support and over time the people who couldn't escape got more desperate, setting up some flimsy defences before they finally left or got removed or the monsters overran them from one direction or other
i doubt this is the real reason, doesn't feel cool enough for the theme of the game lol but interesting to think about anyway. actually i think there was some tidbit in coilhead bestiary about how it might have been a biological weapon, so the theory isn't too weird i guess
i don't want to read the logs as i haven't found them all myself yet and don't want spoilers lol
