Its literal only use is so people can find the ship if they get lost without a walkie-talkie. I do think it should scare off the giants, the dogs are easy to get by if you stay quiet.

I definitely wish it could scare off the giants itd be so useful if someone is almost to the ship but a giant is right at the door

Yep, had the exact thing happen to me on titan...We did not meet quota
